firebox, expensive paperweight

2008-08-23 Thread Hamish Low
I realised that my Zoom H4, that I use for radio journalism and field
recordings can also be an audio interface. It doesn't work well on
full-duplex, and there is the occasional (rare) x-run. But I'm stoked,
at least now i can use all this great software.

According to the ffado project's website, the Presonus firebox is
reported to work. Have you tried using ffado as the backend to jack
instead of FreeBob? (Note, to do this, it will require compiling
libffado yourself and recompiling jack yourself. If you don't want to do
this, wait till I've packaged libffado and put it and jack into a ppa).

Thanks,

Andrew.

Andrew, is there an ETA for this yet? I've been haveing trouble getting ffado
 to compile.

 Thanks
 Chris

In future, please don't top post and even better, interleave the
relevent sections.

As for ffado, I hope to get started on that today. What problems exactly
are you having with libffado? Have you been following this[1] guide?

Thanks,

Andrew.

Got a preamp and not sure if they work with Ubuntustudio

2008-08-23 Thread Carla
Hi I have a Ecko UnltdĀ  preamp mixer M5 and not sure how it will work with
Ubuntu studio. Well any of the apps. Does anyone use anything like this? I am
not even sure wether this is even necessary to use but I found it so well
it is free afterall. Ultimately I don't know if it is working as I do not have
headphones that will fit into it yet(need a guitar jack type). I am sure I will
get one soon. I also can't seem to find anything on the net about this model so
that is why I am asking here. Any feedback would be good as I was told years
back for recording from a mic into a pc that I should use a preamp.

Will the MOTU 2408 ever be supported?

The best people to ask would be the alsa folks:
http://www.alsa-project.org

If it is not supported you can find out why, and possibly what it would
take to get it supported.

I would not hold my breath for MOTU gear though.

At the bottom of the web page i am following it says that
when using the alternate CD installer one needs to setup the cddrive
the section is called Mounting the USB stick as /cdrom. This are the
commands to do it, one needs to open a new console with ALT+1 after
 choosing installation language

 # mkdir /cdrom /dev/cdroms
 # cd /dev/cdroms
 # ln -s ../sda1 cdrom0
 # mount -t vfat /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /cdrom

I tried following those tips but still it does not find the cdrom. My
usb drive shows up as sdb1, i checked read that from dmesg.

Are you substituting that value where appropriate in the guide?

as far as i understand i am doing it ok. I checked with dmesg that my
Kingston USB stick was sdb, then checked which devices were available at
/dev and there it was /dev/sdb1

i noticed that after i do
mount -t vfat /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /cdrom
the installer goes funny and it cannot read the usb drive any more. I
mean, before the problem is that it cannot autodetect the cdrom drive
but it reads the content of the usb drive with no problems, as soon as i
mount the usb drive on /cdrom the installer cannot read the content of
the drive any more, it is like if i had removed it.

I also tried few other options like doing directly
mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /cdrom

same problem. i might be doing something stupid because i cannot see
anyone else complaning online about same error... but i cannot see what
it might be. I checked few times and as far as i can see i am doing all ok.
