What this does is to increase the maximum frequency that an unprivileged
process can request from the RTC. Newer systems have a high performance
clock, so the key might be: dev.hpet.max-user-freq. Either way the
default value is 64.

This just makes sure that the midi module is loaded, which does not
always happen automatically.

I have never changed the timer option but then I have never bothered
with firewire devices (not worth the pain IMO).

It depends. I am quite happy with 8.10, YMMV.

Not surprising, there is more than one way to do it.

You can backup your home partition, reinstall, then restore your home
partition. You can do an in place upgrade (probably best if done from
8.10). Again, there is more than one way to do it.

8.04 to 9.04 is not supported and may or may not work. 8.04 -> 8.10 ->
9.04 should work (I have been upgrading my Ubuntu boxes in place like
this for years, as well as Debian before that). LTS to LTS should also
work. This is for vanilla Ubuntu btw. There may be the odd snag but an
in place upgrade is doable and is in fact how I prefer to do it (a 10+
year Debian habit).

To each their own. This should also work. If reinstalling, what I will
often do is create a list of installed packages:
dpkg --get-selections > installed-packages.txt

After the clean install, you can mark all of the previously installed
packages for install with the following:

cat installed-packages.txt |dpkg --set-selections

Of course you should backup the installed-packages.txt file as it will
be overwritten by the clean install.

PPA vs. Ubuntu backports vs. getdeb.net vs. ???

2009-03-17 Thread wayne
ahoy all,

like many, i am still running Ubuntu Studio (UBS) 8.04 Hardy waiting
for Jaunty and the real time kernel. thanks to everyone for the
work/effort to make this distro work.

i have been running into some bugs recently that have been fixed in
newer versions of the software (e.g. Rosegarden), but i am unsure what
is the recommended/safest way to install more recent versions of
software. my main concern is making the upgrade to Jaunty smooth as
possible when it arrives. i am a bit overwhelmed by the choices, and
being new to Ubuntu/Debian packages/etc, looking for some guidance.

for installing more recent packages in an older release like Hardy
8.04, one seems to have at least 4 options:

+ use a PPA, such as the one provided by Khashayar at
https://launchpad.net/~khashayar/+archive
+ enable backports from the Ubuntu, e.g. deb-src
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-backports main restricted
universe multiverse
+ simply install deb files from getdeb.net
+ download/compile each project from source to get latest/greatest

in general, i assume backports would be a good thing.
unfortunately, they do not contain many UBS-related packages. also, by
default it is disabled in apt/sources.list. is this for a reason?
after that, PPA makes the most sense, as new updates will be received
"automagically". however, i am afraid that may hose the inevitable
upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid to Jaunty.

any comments/advice/rants/etc greatly appreciated.

thanks.

If it's a firewire device, you might need to shut it down (with the
hardware switch) and turn it back on. At least that has been needed
once or twice with my Edirol FA-66.

jack and sound restarting

2009-03-17 Thread john
Hi everyone,
I think I already brought this up before (thanks for your patience), but
found no real solution to the problem:

whenever jack freezes or stops running unexpectedly, after killing it or
restarting it, it WONT work any more. I have been forced to restart the
PC every time and as you might guess, it is a real problem!

So my question is: how can I completely kill and restart the whole sound
system without restarting the matchine? I've tried killing jack through
the terminal and the device manager. That doesn't do the trick! My guess
is I need something that problably restarts ALSA altogether.
Any ideas??

Many thanks!

John

getdeb packages are unofficials but they are good and stable.

Another possibility is keep 8.04 and use unofficial package.

"Ardour 2.7.1 - Thursday, 25 Dec 2008 20:24:54 CET"
http://www.getdeb.net/app/Ardour

I do not how stable they are, and it is generally not good idea use
untested/unofficial packages.

But that way you can keep stable 8.04 and just upgrade Ardour. There is
only 32-bit Ardour 2.7.1 for 8.04...

Best Regards Asmo Koskinen.

Since 8.10 is not recommended and 9.04 probably will be, you should go
from 8.04 to 9.04. The trouble is, as far as I know, nobody knows if
an upgrade from 8.04 to 9.10 will work, at least I don't think it's
officially supported (anybody else, please enlighten me on this
point).

If you happen to have a separate home partition, the easiest way to go
about, in my opinion, is to do a clean install of 9.04 and use your
old home partition. If all else fails, you can always do a complete
backup of your home, do a clean install, and then restore your home
partition.

Regards,
K.
