Hi Tim,

My understanding is that flash drives (included SSD drives?) have a limited
amount of times they can be written to. Therefore, while I think
maintaining the operating system on a flash drive wouldn't be bad (or might
have speed benefits of booting and loading applications for SSD drives), I
wouldn't recommend them for storing audio data, say from recording in
Ardour.

My two cents.

Tim,

I am disheartened to hear that you are having trouble with wireless under
Natty as we switched from gnome-network-admin to network-manager to try to
avoid this situation. Given your statement "fresh install of Ubuntu Studio
(Natty Alpha 3)" I am given to understand you are doing a full install from
DVD and not "upgrading" a vanilla Ubuntu installation.

Did you have this issue before with previous releases of Ubuntu Studio (i.e.
Maverick, Lucid)?

Can you explain what you are trying to do to check if wireless is connected
and how you determined it's not working?

If you right click on the top panel, choose "Add to Panel...", and choose
"Indicator Applet", does it give you an icon with two computers
overlapping? Can you left click it and possibly enable wireless from there?

I am eager to have this issue resolved for all users.

Depends on the Drive. If it is a typical cheapo-stick it will most
likely fail to deliver data fast enough to run Ardour and other
bandwith-intense applications such as some types of samplers.

A good, fast USB-harddisk and much more a SSD will work.

Re: Wireless

2011-03-29 Thread Timothy Cook
Thanks Mike.

So the answer is yes; I would end up with an essentially a system in coma.
:)

I understand that the pros do not want to use wireless for obvious reasons.
Maybe a Live DVD would be helpful. ??

I personally have not had this problem in the past and hopefully won't in
the future. But being "stuck" with Wifi only at this point brought this
issue to my attention.

I suppose I could install Ubuntu Studio on top of the desktop install now.
But that certainly isn't an ideal situation. Is this usable for us
hobbyists? My brief attempts to use Jokosher with the desktop install is a
disaster. It just doesn't seem very intuitive to me. I haven't even been
able to decide if it is supposed to be Jack aware. But then installing
Audacity has been helpful either. Maybe my issues are more with not yet
getting Compiz setup correctly. But trying to use the Ubuntu Classic option
has shown that then menus do not work either.

I know. Most of these complaints do not belong here. But thanks
for reading anyway.

Interesting discussion.

Are the concerns that originally led to not using network-manager (nm) gone?
(for the record IIRC, difficulties to have concurrent wifi and lowlatency
audio)
AFAIK the potential impact on realtime audio still exist: in my last
attempts some months ago, it wasn't possible to enable wifi without
compromising xrun-free operation.
Are there any news on this side?

Wireless

2011-03-29 Thread Timothy Cook
When beginning a fresh install of Ubuntu Studio (Natty Alpha 3) Network
detection fails.
I only have Wifi network connectivity where I am now. So I am concerned
that Wifi is not enabled by default in Studio. This means that if I install
it as a fresh install I will not be able to complete installation/upgrades.
Is this correct? I hope not. :)

RE: Master Keyboard

2011-03-29 Thread Karl Giesing

> I'm now looking for a Keyboard Midi Controller.
>
> Do you thing that a Alesis q25 would do for us ubuntu users?
The IO/2 has MIDI ports, so I'm assuming you're just looking for a MIDI
keyboard, right? (Not, say, a USB keyboard?)
If so - pretty much anything will do. Frankly, it depends on your budget, and
what you actually want to use the keyboard for.
Are you going to be playing Beethoven? If so, get an 88-key controller with
hammer action. (Almost all of these are also digital pianos.) The cheapest of
these that I've seen is the Williams Allegro (~$300).
Are you going to be doing basic melodies and bass lines, and controlling soft
synths? If so, then you would need something with a lot of knobs. For the same
price as a Q25, you could get an M-Audio KeyStudio 25, which (in addition to
the two-octave keyboard) has eight programmable knobs and one slider. Or, if
you also want drum pads, the Akai MPK Mini seems like a good deal: 8 knobs, 8
pads, and a mini two-octave keyboard for ~$100. M-Audio also makes the Axiom,
which has all the MPK features, plus DAW controller keys (play/stop/rec/etc).

Really, at this point you just need to shop around.

Re: [SOLVED!] .mp4 Sound Fix

2011-03-29 Thread teza
Hi Mike,

You can use this commande line in a terminal to extract your music from a
video.

Séparation Son/Vidéo

ffmpeg -i "your video" -vn -ar 44100 -ab 192k -ac 2 -f wav -y "mane of
file.wav"

Otherwise you can use the soft name Edk, who can that and much more for you
