Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Enhancing the desktop

2013-11-07 Thread Rivera Valdez
Hi, Hazan :)

I'd never tried to change that stuff, but in case you have
not enough answers from the UbuntuStudio community you
can also try the Xfce community as well. Things like "unfocused
scroll" (which I personally love ;) are probably Xfce-relative, etx.

Have you tried keeping Alt pressed after Tab for the "All open
windows view"?

Sorry for not being of much help,

regards!

Thanks, Hazan, Laurent, Rob, Mike, Jimmy, and Craig,
You have been tremendously helpful.
Knowing that we should be able to make things work is important,
immediately and longer-range.
The insights into the thinking of educators are also helpful.
Moreover, I am now re-energized in the quest to get more educational tools
into the hands of those who need it most, including kids who don't get
encouraged at home and who may not even know they have potential.
So thank you for the specific assistance and for the example of people
taking the time to be helpful.
Warmest regards to all,
Pete
PS -- Imagine what might happen if people start thinking about what they
would do if they had a supercomputer of their very own that fit in a
pocket. Then compare the specs on modern smartphones -- the ones that will
sell for fifty bucks or less a couple of years from now -- with the specs
of the CRAY-1 ca2000. Hope I can stick around for a few more years to see
what happens.

[ubuntu-studio-users] Enhancing the desktop

2013-11-07 Thread Hazan Pérez
Good day community,

A bit of background: Used a couple of versions of UbuntuStudio in the
past, I think it's a very good idea for a Distro. I work mostly with
graphics, some video and a bit of desktop publishing, so having a distro
with such tools available out of the box is great (can't say the same
for all the audio stuff, most of that software I don't even know how to
use).

For this semester I decided to switch to Linux Mint, which is nice but
it has a few problems, thanks to the Cinnamon DE, which has let me sad
and frustrated. I'm thinking of switching to US again, but there are a
few things about XFCE that I don't like.

XFCE is really nice, fast, lean and light while being pretty, but I miss
a bit of functionality from other DEs. I can't use another DE because of
a default sound config (wrote about that some time ago but didn't
received much help). Sound is rightly configured in default US with
XFCE, but if I change the DE it goes all wrong.

Now, for that extra functionality, here are the things I miss the most
from other DEs:

- Unfocused Scroll: This is if, for example, I have a window in the
background and a smaller in front, if I scroll the background window it
wont get focused (it wont go up in front). know a way to configure this?

- All open windows view, like expo, without using Compiz. Compiz breaks
the beauty of XFCE.

- A window list that can also work as a dock, that is, a window list in
a panel that can have "pinned" icons for applications, but when clicked
on opens the application an keeps working as it's window selector (not
appearing an extra icon).

... Plus a few more things. I know that all this is DE oriented, and not
exactly for the core functionality of US and probably not on the right
list, but I'd appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

2013-11-07 Thread ©raig ®au
I graduated in 2008 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering using nothing
but Open Source software. At the time it was still Open Office, but I used
it flawlessly (Writer... Calc... Impress...) And I used SciLab instead of
Matlab (although there was a Linux version of Matlab, not to mention
Mathematica, Maple, Pro-E... etc.) The only thing Linux didn't have was a
good alternative for Minitab.

But I digress... Calc can do almost everything Excel can... Almost. And for
the purpose of college it most certainly can.

Hell, you should see some of the garbage graphs that Minitab produces and
they are the industry standard in the real world.

same results using Libre Office but it might look a bit different
cosmetically and have to be made doing a couple of other steps in the
workflow than using Excel. The University I went to was supposed to accept
Open Office/Libre Office or MS Office files when turning in assignments.
However, some teachers just wouldn't bother with other than MS Office and
to make sure they could open the files and make it look like I wanted to I
only turned in PDF files. That said, even that would make some teachers
come back to me claiming they could open my strange file ...

Google Docs can work but I have found that more advanced (and some basic)
features are not present in Google Docs. I use it only for simple layouts
and straight-forward spreadsheets.

for me, the problem lies in the very assignment. if the assignment is "use
a microsoft product to create a document...", then, thats the assignment.
we all know that ilbreoffice is a viable product, and works as advertised,
but the only way to work in the above situation is to create a document
that looks like it was created in a microsoft product. i think this can be
challenging for some specific documents such as spread sheets. i never
understood what the issue was, since the teachers, and anyone else for that
matter, is provided a free copy of libreoffice. but, the teachers arent
interested in learning new software, and may legitimately not have access
to installing software on the machines at their disposal (or, they just
dont understand how to install software). i feel like for a linux solution,
googe docs may have an advantage here, since you can usually just share a
link with someone, and they can open the document created in any web
browser without adding, changing, or installing something. still, its not a
microsoft product.

You could be the only one with that device on this list. I read about how
it worked with one FireWire stack and not the other and decided against it,
though that was years ago and I hope support is better. Ideally, it would
be up to echo to provide you support. They may not officially support
Linux. I would rule out a hardware issue. If the device worked with the
13.10 live CD and doesn't work now with the 13.10 live CD, then that could
indicate an issue with the hardware somewhere. I would want to take the
device to another machine with the same, known supported live CD, and
ideally test it with whatever operating system echo officially supports.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] An Offert to the State

2013-11-07 Thread BA Huys
Canonical does offer commercial support for vanilla Ubuntu. It's on the
website. I think that vanilla Ubuntu or Xubuntu would be the best options.
The low latency in US will cause cause confusion, and to be honest, be a
bit of overkill. I have a setup of Xubuntu that I use to introduce folks to
Linux. It's setup to mimic winxp cosmetically, and most users find it
close enough that they learn everything within a few hours.

My 2 cents.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] firewire broken after upgrade

2013-11-07 Thread Mac
Thank you. The package will make it much faster for me to try your patch.

Otherwise I'd need to re-learn how to build the svn trunk...I have done it
before...just been a couple years.

I might be able to test this this weekend.

I think that promoting Ubuntu Studio might be hard, but promoting
Xubuntu/Lubuntu/Ubuntu might be a better approach. Then one would also have
several references to point out in the rest of Europe where a change have
had positive reactions.

I think the hardest part will be to convince people on the cost of
re-training everyone and make sure all old applications and templates will
work or be able to be transferred.

[ubuntu-studio-users] An Offert to the State

2013-11-07 Thread Set Hallstrom
Hi All,

In September i decided to find out the total amount of money that the
state of Sweden spends on Microsoft and apple licenses/products each year.

This took quite some time, but i got an estimate answer from the
department in charge: between 450-500 _million_ Swedish crowns _each
year_ (69'291'450.00 US Dollar). This sum is _only_ regarding Microsoft
licenses.

I've also been told that there is a regular meeting where investors and
computer related whatnots are invited to present solutions and offers.
(I’m still expecting the exact date of this).

So i was wondering:

- Should we organize the presence of Ubuntustudio at that meeting? Or
should this be brought to the attention of Ubuntu as a whole (if not
already aware)?
- Would/Could this be a bad thing for Ubuntustudio?
- And if it's a good thing: who is in? :)
- Has there been any previous attempts that we could learn from?

Obviously, since this is in Sweden, it would be good if some swedes
responded, but hey! Europe is a union now isn't it? And Ubuntu is
worldwide, unlike some U.S. devi.. hrm.. devels ;)

Now, let me be straight: i'm aware GNU/Linux exists since way before i
stopped playing NES, that i don't know even half of what has been
attempted until today and also that i have no intention to become some
wannabe messiah or nextlevel Stallman (i'm just a happy post-n00b
computing in freedom). I know big money can be devastating for projects
like ubuntustudio, and i am ready to eat any negative criticism like a
good boy. My interest in this investigation is the betterment of my
community, which by definition cannot be achieved by a single person.

Yours optimystically,

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] firewire broken after upgrade

2013-11-07 Thread bart deruyter
Thanks for the info Takashi,

I tried what you suggested:
sudo modprobe firewire_ohci

ffado-diag tells me then the new 1394 is loaded, but not active

sudo modprobe firewire_core
doesn't result in anything

I now connected my video camera, as firewiredevice, to check if it might be
my audiofire12 being broken, but it does not get recognized anymore either.

trying:
ls /dev doesn't show any fw devices after loading the firewire_ohci module.

I'm starting to guess if it would be the firewire ports itself that are not
active for some reason...

Grtz,

Bart
