Many thanks. I'll work through that - bit by bit (It's years since I did
techie work).

Run

If you then run

   xev

you get information about hardware that might move the mouse pointer.

Perhaps the hardware is broken. I guess that assumed the software should be
fishy, it won't display something, when the mouse pointer moves, but this
not necessarily is ensured, so better disable the mouse pad and connect an
external mouse for testing purpose.

Run

   xinput --list

and then

   xinput disable NUMBER_OF_THE_TOUCHPAD

An example, since I don't have a touchpad, I show how to disablen and
enable my optical mouse.

   xinput --list
   ⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4[slave pointer
 (2)]
   ⎜ ↳ USB Optical Mouse id=8[slave pointer
 (2)]
   ⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3[master keyboard (2)]
   ↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboardid=5[slave
keyboard (3)]
   ↳ Power Button id=6[slave
keyboard (3)]
   ↳ Power Button id=7[slave
keyboard (3)]
   ↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=9[slave
keyboard (3)]

To disable the mouse I need to run

   xinput disable 8

and to enable it

   xinput enable 8

Ralf

[ubuntu-studio-users] Spurious effects

2016-05-18 Thread Ian Fantom

I have Ubuntu Studio 16.4 installed on an ASUS X550C laptop.

When I write a document in LibreOffice Writer I get all sorts of
spurious effects, which I initially thought were due to an oversensitive
mouse pad. I had the problem before upgrading from Ubuntu 14.4.

But now I've been watching my hand movements, and I get the effects when
my hands are nowhere near the mouse pad.

Suddenly the mouse pointer will jump to a random position in the text,
and the typing will continue there.

When selecting a text sometimes the text is replaced by a random letter.

This morning the mouse pointer had disappeared when I opened the laptop lid.

The screensave seems to have disappeared.

The icon for my memory stick no longer appears on the left-hand menu
(DEVICES, PLACES, NETWORK).

Any ideas?

Regards,
Ian

[ubuntu-studio-users] Language switching

2015-09-11 Thread Ian Fantom
Since upgrading to Ubuntu Studio I've been unable to discover how to set
the system to enable language switching for keyboard input. Can anyone
point me in the right direction?

Thanks
