Sounds like your install might have been unsuccessful. Try re-installing again.

Re: Audio Production Laptop

2008-11-19 Thread Jason Schaefer
I am a huge fan of the Lenovo (ibm) thinkpads! They have the best
suspend support and they use well supported hardware, which is not
always true of Dell or anyone else. I have the thinkpad t61 15.4
widescreen 1680x1050, which is a great resolution for working with
ardour and hydrogen, etc. It is a little large for lots of travel, but
with the 6 cell battery, its very light. I have the iwl 3945 ABG
wireless. Its awesome except the need for proprietary firmware. The
atheros has free drivers now, ath9k https://www.fsf.org/news/ath9k So
I might replace the mini-pci intel wireless with one of those:-) I
also love how rugged the computer is, great for traveling. I take my
laptop everywhere and my previous dell laptops would get wobly screens
and flimsy keys. The price was great too, (2gb mem, 2.1 intel core 2
duo, bluetooth, wifi, dvd/cd burner, 3 yr full protection warranty,
built in mem card reader) $1170.00

Oh and lastly, I recently built the 2.6.26.5 kernel patched with
realtime rt and the internal intel hda sound card became a rock solid,
extremely low latency sound card (~ 5ms). Previously it was crap and I
was forced to always use my m-audio fast track pro (~8ms).

Re: hello ubuntu studio users out there

2008-09-30 Thread Jason Schaefer
I have an m-audio fast track pro
(http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackPro.html) similar to
the edirol ua-25.. In terms of recording samplers and such, I would
recommend using a dj mixer that has 4 inputs or an fx input. You can
plug the sampler into its own dedicated channel or fx channel. You can
mix manually on the mixer and record everything on master out. Unless
you want the sampler on its own track in ardour... you might look at
the fast track ultra
(http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUltra.html). Keep in
mind two of the inputs are XLR only , so you will need to convert to
XLR from your mixer. The other two are XLR and TRS 1/4" combo, just
like the fast track pro.

There is absolutely no reason to setup a new distribution for
something like this! This happens way too much over the years. Just
work with the existing people, its a lot more effective and it makes
less work for everyone. As well as happier users!

new user, be sure to add the user to all the correct groups in
/etc/group (mimic the existing user). If everything is ok in the new
user environment you could move your files into the new users /home.
You could also replace any potentially broken configurations (i.e,
.gnome2 with good ones from the new user.

As for the kernel, you will need to install that manually using
synaptic or apt-get (just search for the latest kernel and install
it). Don't uninstall your old one, this way you can reboot into it if
the new one breaks.

This is the only thing I could find on linux rt users ->

Just like the U Studio meta packages, the realtime (rt) kernel is
available to all Ubuntu users. You can install/un-install it anytime
with apt (synaptic).

Re:

2008-05-04 Thread Jason Schaefer
Absolutely! Essentially Ubuntu Studio is made up of meta packages for
Ubuntu. Its a great model.. very modular, flexible, scalable, etc.

Its so easy to remove and add packages after install of regular
Ubuntu. I would personally be happy to see U Studio NOT focus on a
install cd at all! It has more potential to introduce new bugs or fall
behind in development. For those who have limited bandwidth, U studio
could distribute DVD's full of all packages that make up the Studio
(Audio, Video, Graphics). When you finish your install you could pop
the dvd in, add it to sources.list, and install the pertinent content.
Synaptic is easy enough to use; could be confusing to many... Perhaps
a fancy little program could come pre-installed that would guide the
users through this?

..my 2sense.

Re: Hardy doesn't recognize usb turntable

2008-05-03 Thread Jason Schaefer
Fred - you will need to compress the file. In nautilus right click the
file and Create Archive then select .zip or tar.gz or tar.bz2. Anyone
of these should compress enough to be able to attach. BUT, I recommend
you use http://pastebin.com/ send the link to the pasted text and then
you don't have to attach or compress.

its because it needs the dev package for jack, libjack-dev.

Just for reference, this is a rough list of packages that I installed
in order to compile ardour 2.4.1

apt-get install libasound2-dev libsamplerate0-dev libsamplerate0
libjack-dev libboost-dev libfftw3-dev libfftw3-3 librdf0 libraptor1
libart-2.0-dev libxslt1-dev xml2 liblo0-dev libgnomecanvas2-dev
liblrdf0 liblrdf0-dev libglib2.0-dev libglib2.0-0

and then this->
tar xfvj ardour-2.4.1.tar.bz2
cd ardour-2.4.1/
scons
sudo scons install

You can also create a launcher with this as the command, if you don't

realtime kernel

2008-04-21 Thread Jason Schaefer
Hello

I want to build 2.6.25 realtime, where is the appropriate patch for
this? There are lots of references to various patches and its
confusing not to mention
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/ only has 2.6.24
patches.
TIA! -Jason

Yes your icecast server and/or relay will need to be a static ip and

Re: advice for a Streaming Server Hardware

2008-03-14 Thread Jason Schaefer
yes. very little resources are required. A good sound interface is
nice but most cards work nowadays. I do not agree that you should not
install a desktop. I use ices2 with jack and find the desktop to be
useful in other ways than just streaming. I use meterbridge to monitor
levels and qjackctrl (frontend for jack) so I can monitor and use
multiple inputs and outputs.

Re: Audacity crashes Jack

2008-03-03 Thread Jason Schaefer
Do you really need to run audacity with jack? You should write to the
audacity mailing list about this. Jack and audacity don't work so well
right now (portaudio). Maybe you want to look into another sound
editor that has better jack support. http://jackaudio.org/applications

Again, you might think of upgrading portaudio to the latest dev
snapshot. That is what I had to do for mixxx (another portaudio/jack
app) to work. I can give more details if you want to try it.

You can find the .wav files in an ardour project under the sounds
folder. You can break the project if you mess these up. BTW, Ardour
has the best jack support, the most features, and is the most stable
sound editor for gnu/linux right now. Is it too complex for your
needs? If you stick with the basics, its actually really straight
forward. Be sure to read the manual
http://ardour.org/files/manual/index.html

Re: Audacity crashes Jack

2008-02-26 Thread Jason Schaefer
Does it work at all in Ubuntu studio before it crashes? Can you give
more detail?

I don't use audacity anymore but a few days ago I installed audacity
on uStudio and noticed that it does support jack now. It looks like it
uses portaudio for jack. Can others use jack and audacity on ubuntu?
>From my experience with portaudio and ubuntu is that its been shipped
with jack disabled. I have had to compile the latest portaudio
snapshot for jack support. Can anyone confirm/expand on this? Of
course even using my compiled pa I get an error -> "error while
opening device. Please check the output device settings and the
project sample rate." Its set to 44.1 both in audacity and jack. Not
sure whats going on of course you can just run audacity using alsa
but its annoying if you want to use multiple sound apps at the same
time. Javier, you can edit tracks that have been exported from ardour
(wav).

Re: Jack Rack crashes

2008-02-23 Thread Jason Schaefer
I have had issues with jackrack crashing when too many effects are
active or when using experimental effects. Ardour does have built in
effects and they are very nice (LADSPA). You can either add them to a
individual channel or the master out or both. You can add as many as
you need too. http://ardour.org/files/manual/sn-plugins.html

mixxx and jack, horrible sound playback

2008-02-01 Thread Jason Schaefer
I built the latest svn of mixxx with the portaudio snapshot (for jack
support) and sound playback is horrible. It has a crunchy digital
delay sound. If I raise my frames/periods to 1024 (latency ~48ms) it
sounds clear. This is true for my built in intel AC97 and usb M-Audio
fastrack pro. Both of which, I used successfully in the past, using
this same hardware. I recently installed ubuntu studio (installed from
dvd). Do you think this is the issue? Has anyone experienced this on
ubuntu studio? I posted to both lists just in case...

Thanks
jason

Ok... I installed generic and have the same issues. I also logged in
via ssh to see what happens and it locked/hung up.
