i actually had a problem like similar and i had the medibuntu repos, i
think it's ffmpeg or avconv related. to test my dvd's before burning,
i mount the iso and use mplayer. i think the fix was to uninstall and
compile ffmpeg from source. i haven't made a dvd in a while though.

2013-01-21 Thread Anthony Hall
Hi.

There is a very easy solution. Provided you live in a country where there
are no patents on codecs go to: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Read the disclaimer and if it applies, follow the instructions.

Everything will be working just fine.

I would like to add that when I was previously using Ubuntu Studio
10.10, I had much better luck with VLC and other programs in playing
video DVDs, it seems that with 12.04 things are not quite the same.
Probably because of moving from Gnome 2 to Xfce. I still prefer the old
Gnome 2, but have managed to get the Xfce desktop more or less to my
liking, the Cairo Dock is particularly helpful.

I had originally created the DVD ISO with Devede, but as that would not
play, I tried DVD Styler -- which produced a better DVD.

I have just tried a different video DVD ISO and that also would not work
in VLC or Xine. Then I tried it in Movie Player and it worked, and the
DVD I just created also worked in Movie Player, but still not in Xine
which keeps saying it cannot play DVDs.

As for the comment on mounting the ISO, that was the first thing I
tried, and trying to get VLC to open it as a mounted DVD, which failed.

So at least it can work, with Movie Player, but not with other software
that I thought could play DVDs, whereas I never thought of Movie Player
as a DVD playing program.

I have not yet burned the ISO to an actual disc, just wanted to be sure
it all worked okay first, from the ISO, before using a disc. At least
now I know it works can be burned.

There are several issues with Quantal on my machine too. Some issues can

Re: How do I get Ubuntu Studio to play dvds.

2013-01-20 Thread David King

I am having some problems playing DVD files on my Ubuntu Studio 12.04.

The DVD is an ISO file, created using DVD Styler, from my own mpeg files.

I am surprised that Ubuntu Studio cannot play the DVDs it creates.

I looked online and could not find a suitable solution yet. I have tried
playing the ISO in VLC and Xine. With VLC, nothing much happens, and
then VLC will not close and hogs the CPU until I kill it. With Xine, it
reports that it cannot play the file.

I was able to play the ISO as a DVD in a Windows virtual machine on the
same PC, so this a problem with something missing in Ubuntu Studio. I
have the restricted extras installed, including libdvdread.

So how can I play the DVD ISO files I created in Ubuntu Studio?
