Hi,
You may want to look for your Nvidia model against the version of the
driver to use.
I have a GeForce FX5200 and nvidia-current driver package is NOT suitable
for usage with this card, I had to rollback to nvidia-173 or something like
that.

a reference, it solved my problem (even though I have limited
administration capabilities thru nvidia-settings).

look for a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf that maybe the nvidia proprietary
tool put in place. having multiple system issues like that with graphics
and networking would make me want to test the hardware, or look at my
configuration and backtrack what i have done.
