In the end, I'd recommend just downloading the metapackages, minus
desktop, because this also updates certain config files (like
  /etc/security/limits.conf) for you.

This is in fact how I do it. It has worked great for me thus far.

Precisely what function does the ubuntu-desktop package serve? Are they
just graphical improvements?

I do have it installed and it hasn't caused any problems so far.

Sorry. What's the right way to do it?

1.) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation

2.) sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude install ubuntustudio-desktop
ubuntustudio-audio ubuntustudio-audio-plugins ubuntustudio-graphics
ubuntustudio-video linux-rt

If you can't do #2. Can someone explain why so that I understand?

Also, under #1 it says: Currently, the Ubuntu preferred version for production
would be Ubuntu Hardy LTS. It is indicated where to find backports for
important applicatio1an like Ardour on this page.

So does that mean that Jaunty is not stable for everyday use?

Thank you!

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea from that I'm angry. I'm just

Can I do #2 that I posted below below: (sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude

ubuntustudio-graphics ubuntustudio-video linux-rt) in Jaunty or do I have to

In previous versions I was able to do #2, but the instructions on the website
point to: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation which
doesn't tell you that you can just install the ubuntustudio packages.

So, just to understand. Can I do #2 or do I have to go through all of the
various steps in #1?

Thank you...

Hi, Natalia. Since you're new, you should also know that the etiquette on
this list is to post on the bottom of the quoted text when replying, not on
the top.

As for your question, it will work perfectly fine for you to just install
the Ubuntu Studio metapackages: ubuntustudio-audio,
ubuntustudio-audio-plugins, ubuntustudio-graphics and ubuntustudio-video.
You should probably not install the ubuntustudio-desktop packages due to
some conflicts with the regular Ubuntu desktop. This is why the
instructions link you to the Ubuntu Studio Preparation page. That page is
actually just a guide to installing most of the individual packages to be
found in Ubuntu Studio, which essentially makes your machine like Ubuntu
Studio, just without certain features (as the first line in the
instructions indicates).

In the end, I'd recommend just downloading the metapackages, minus desktop,
because this also updates certain config files (like
/etc/security/limits.conf) for you.

also updates certain config files (like
 /etc/security/limits.conf) for you.

No problem. Is that explained somewhere? I didn't see it on the info page or
in the welcome message.

I just installed the metapackages including the desktop earlier today. What
kind of conflicts with the regular Ubuntu desktop are there so that I know what
to look for.

Everything seems to be working okay so far including the RT kernel which I've
been reading has some issue for certain setups.

Thanks...

I'm not sure what specific issues you might run into, I'm getting my info

Just a note: This current chat was my concern. Grabbing -desktop grabs
-settings and -menu. This will cause issues. If it already hasn't been
set to conflict in Jaunty, it will be. This side grade will be
investigated. I think the future recommendation will to only grab the
multimedia metas and the art.

It doesn't go into details, though I think later in that thread he
mentions there are issues when either upgrading to a new version of
Ubuntu, or of you try to side-grade back to a regular Ubuntu install.

Also, you're right that the Ubuntu Studio Preparation documentation
doesn't mention at all that you can just download the metapackages. This
is something that someone should probably just take the initiative and
write (Hey, maybe even me.) Like many people, I'm familiar with this way
of side-grading from doing it with older versions and reading this list.

Resending this post, because I just realized I sent it to only Natalia and
not the whole list.

Also, I realize now that Natalia was referring to the bottom-post policy. I
don't think this is mentioned on the website anywhere. It probably should
be.
