Sorry, that email was sent from a different account so it had to wait for
moderator approval. I didn't mean to confuse the situation after it had
already seemed to have been solved for you.

LMHOSTS is a simple text file on the windows end in:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.sam

It's basically a line by line text file of host names. Windows will attempt
resolution via netbios first, then broadcast, then finally look in LMHOSTS
(this
can be changed in the registry as well). It's just one more method of working
around a screwy network... I am not sure, however, if this will actually
display properly in network neighborhood - it may just work during
resolution... i.e. when you manually enter the name of the computer.

Re: Windows network gone - I can no longer see it.

2008-10-18 Thread Daniel Caleb

Try the LMHOSTS method as well, that seems to tie up the holes in windows
workgroup. I've noticed really erratic behavour with Windows networks, and
I've never really figured out the tricks to it.

Usually the way I get around in windows networks, and this is on a windows
machine as well - not just from a *nix machine - is to use the IP address:

\\192.168.102.2\thesharename\somefolder

and as Christopher pointed out, smb:\\ is usually the protocol from a nix
machine, which can also be done from a terminal. It's kind of clunky, but it
works. I've also had fairly good success with smb4k.

Wow! Gustin, you beat me quite convincingly to the punch. I got in
very late last night and saw this but was too tired to reply. That's
a very concise explanation of what the OP needs to do.

I have all the local IPs defined in the /etc/hosts on each *nix box,
along with the name of the machine. That way I can access by either
IP addy or name.

Here's my local /etc/hosts:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 spock
##
## Other static IP computers on this network
192.168.0.88 ##spare
192.168.0.89 ##spare
192.168.0.90 UBtestbed #Ubuntu development
192.168.0.91 RHtestbed #Red Hat development
192.168.0.92 jedi #Trevor WinXP
192.168.0.93 naruto #Ian WinXP
192.168.0.94 hitchcock #Media center Ubuntu Hardy
192.168.0.95 abbeyroad #DAW WinXP/Ubuntu Hardy
192.168.0.96 ##spare
192.168.0.97 spock #SDM Ubuntu Intrepid
192.168.9.98 parrothead #Sandy WinXP
192.168.0.99 dmz #FTP & printer server Win2K
##
## addresses 192.168.0.100-120 are reserved for DHCP assigned
## by the D-Link DIR-615 wireless router.
##
## The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

I am currently having a problem reaching "naruto" and "jedi" from the
systems that are *nix based. But not from the other Windows boxes. The
two PCs in question are my sons' Windows XP systems which have been
recently upgraded with Trendnet Wireless "N" cards, and just upgraded
with WinXP service pack 3. I can't ping them by name or IP address,
and get the NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME error when doing a smbclient -L
//machinename -U username at either target. That will be a project
for Sunday morning, while the dog, the NFL and I have the place to
ourselves.

Forget the GUI tool for now (we are troubleshooting now)

- From the command line:

smbclient -L //computername -U username

The computer name is the name of the computer you are connecting to.
The username is one that exists on the target machine.

If you get an error like this:
failed (Error NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME)

then that means that name resolution is broken. There are two solutions
(technically 3):

1) create entries in /etc/hosts that map names to ip addresses
1B) Set up a DNS server to do name lookups. This is what I do but some
people find this scary and it is an overkill solution.
2) connect with IP addresses

So, instead of a name, use the IP address
smbclient -L //192.168.0.100 -U username

Also, in my house I map all the network drives. So on windows machines
all network shares get drive letters, under linux they get mount points
(as defined in /etc/fstab or whatever GUI front end you use). Relying
on the workgroup browser is a bad idea, even in a purely windows
network. I have had a home network long before I got into Linux in the
'90s so this approach is born of years of hard earned experience.

I can probably help on this having had to deal with it in Hardy myself
(we have a mixed *nix/WinXP network at my house). But it will have to
wait until later today. I'm up to my eyeballs in Windows and hardware

I'm seriously out of touch with SMB these days. If you were using Redhat, 5
years ago, I could maybe help you.

Try typing "smb://computer/share' into the file browser (nautilus). Maybe
that would work??

I'm sure someone here can help.

Are you trying to access Windows shares, on a windows workgroup? Are you on
a windows domain?

You might want to give up VBox... ;-(

The SMB protocol can be funky. Likely the original problem had to do
with netbios names not resolving. I have never played with virtual box
but it may be breaking broadcast traffic. I seriously doubt that
SMB/CIFs was broken, just your name resolution.

Just a tip, you can put the names of your windows machines along with
their IPs into your /etc/hosts file. You can also open windows shares
with //ip/share.

Relying on the flaky "network" thingy is not the best idea. This even
breaks under various windows versions.

Of course, if you are so inclined you can set up DNS for your LAN, but
that probably does not interest most "normal" people :)

Re: Windows network gone - I can no longer see it.

2008-10-14 Thread Active Accounts

Well, I know this is getting off topic... and I'd like to understand the whole
windows networking thing as well. I've also seem some strangeness with that,
but chalked it up to my lack of understanding and, of course, windows funky
behavior - sometimes it never works right until you've rebooted a couple
times.

However, I had to toss my two cents in on Intrepid... It's my OS of choice
right now, upgrading from Debian testing (lenny). Ubuntu has done a really
good job of putting this together. I do notice the "Beta" parts of it...
Random freezes, don't stress the machine to much... ;) I have yet to get into
any serious audio/video applications although this next week will be the test
when I go on show site... Also, Im not running an RT kernel, just a custom
patched 2.6.27.

For the record alot has changed with intrepid... aside from a .27 kernel,
there's the new Xorg server 7.4 and xorg core 1.5 - both of these brought in
alot of new support. I've been running my ATI radeon on the Open Source
drivers, using 3D rendering and compiz with no problems... It's nice to get
away from proprietary software when I can...

I give Intrepid two thumbs... (knock on wood) :P

Let me offer some friendly advice from sticking my hand in the fire.
Do NOT under any circumstances upgrade to Intrepid until the Ubuntu
Studio team roll out a production release on Intrepid. it's one thing
to go Beta when your needs are light office/email/internet, etc. It's
another when the apps that are being run are serious audio & video
tools. There are still way too many things that go south in 8.10
for no apparent reason/get hosed with the latest set of Beta patches.
Like right now...my audio, which was working fine last night when I
watched some India vs Australia cricket highlights is once again not
outputting any sound in any audio or video app. WTF? No doubt I will
have to reconfigure audio once the current overnight upgrades are
installed and I reboot. :-( For the "J" release next April I won't be
in such a damn hurry to exercise my curiosity. I managed to resist
this time until the Alpha 6 at which point I had to dive in. I should
have kept resisting. There's a lot of good sense in "if it ain't broke
don't keep programming / engineering it until it is!". :-)

I'm still using Hardy - I've really had to put myself in a straitjacket to
prevent myself upgrading but I only will when its officially out. That said
I'm so in love with the OS

What revision of Ubuntu Studio are you running? I ask because I've
recently upgraded to Intrepid 8.10 to test things out, and all kinds
of things like audio, networking, video blow up / disappear / reappear
/ reconfigure themselves incorrectly...to list just the tip of the
iceberg things that are working in less than stellar fashion. So if
you're not on the official 8.04 Hardy then all bets are off.

Also what rev level of vBox are you running? The transition from 1.6
was not smooth, but after some false starts all the immediate gotchas
have been nailed and 2.0.2 seems stable. Except that it keeps losing
one of my shared folders after a physical reboot, which is a minor
annoyance but no show-stopper.

Not too sure what you mean. The network 'shut down'?

I meant that the 'network' should have worked, as long as VBOX was not
running.

Sounds like vbox was interfering with your network interface. SMB should
have worked when vbox was shut down.

I'm guessing that you could still access the internet?

Did it work when vbox was not running?

I know that virtualbox has some odd networking/smb stuff built in. Maybe
that was causing a problem.
