$ rm -r ~/.cache does solve several issues.

I still have not such an issue for Ubuntu Studio Precise and Quantal,
but for Ubuntu Quantal + Ubuntu Studio packages I can't change anything
for the fonts.

If I use Ubuntu Studio Quantal some things are broken, e.g. Evolution
and if I use Ubuntu Quantal + Ubuntu Studio packages, then other things
are broken, e.g. the quality of the fonts. If I just use Ubuntu Quantal
without audio software, nearly everything is ok.

The best illustration of the latter is to open Terminal. Assuming the
default colors (white on black), the vertical bar character (|) displays
as pink.

I've reproduced this using the live DVD on two computers.

Both of the computers in question run Xubuntu 12.04 (which Ubuntu Studio
seems to be based on) and text looks great there.

Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks.

I tried the various suggestions and most of them made no difference. The
one that helped was changing Sub-pixel order from RGB to None. I'm
reasonably happy with the way text looks now, although it doesn't look
as good as in Xubuntu.

I'm sure I tried all of the Sub-pixel order settings before posting so I
don't know why I missed that.

The Sub-pixel order settings RGB (the default) and BGR resulted in
thinner (unattractive) letters. None and the two other settings look
about the same but I chose None.

Thank you to everyone that responded.

worse with

Its like you red my mind!!

I had to wonder too. So i looked at the picture on another computer here
at wirk and seeing the same error i came to the same conclusion, but
since my knowledge is very limited, it dosen't get me much further.

Please keep me posted if you figure any clue out :)

As you can see on the screenshot, only very thin fonts get very bad (but
hey... its Ubuntu Light...)

I wonder how it can be, that I see all fonts on my computer as wanted,
but your screenshot, does show me your distorted fonts.

If it would be an issue regarding to the display mask and other monitor
settings, I shouldn't be able to see the distorted fonts too, but they
should be ok here.

If I e.g. cut a cable for one colour, RGB (VGA), then I would see bad
colours on my screen, but if I would send you a screenshot, you won't
see it. So why do I see your distorted fonts? I guess this narrow done
the reason for this issue.

Thanks ALOT for your input!

I don't have that much resolutions options to chose from. And as you
mention this, i noticed i can chose between 2 very odd values
1366x768 or 1360x768

I first tought it would make a big difference, (as you can see on this
screenshot it is clearly not properly aligned to the screen raster
http://sakrecoer.com/pixelerror.png )

But no... no noticeable change...

I'll try to fibble with gama and the xrandr command which seems to allow
me to use custom sizes. However, i must confess that i fear this hole
issue is, in my case, due to the hardware configuration i run. I'll keep
you posted if i make any progress :)

Thanks a zillion again for your time,

IIRC ARandR does provide ratios of screen formats. For a CRTs e.g.
"Letterbox" 4:3 might also have impact to your issue.
Did you try different resolutions? ... Setings Manager > Display?

Some resolutions are nearly equal, I e.g. use 1152x864, which is nearly
the same as 1024x768. I suspect it doesn't have impact to the font
issue, but you never know.

I have the same issue. I managed to reduce it by tweaking the settings
Ralph kindly suggested, but since I never got it quite perfect: i
learned to live with it...

But 95 dpi seemed to make it alot better (so used to either 72 or 96
that i didn't even try before today! cheers Ralph!)

I'd be interested in knowing any other tricks.
