I fully agree with you. [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Next steps to enable translation imports for universe projects
Hello Martin! I am writing this email on behalf of Ubuntu translatons coordinators and I am also CC-ing relevant mailing list. In this cycle we would like to do some work on enabling translation of selected universe packages in Launchpad. Based on the feedback from the translators we decided to initially try translating 2 packages: wine and compizconfig-settings-manager. We were wondering should the next steps be from technical point of view. After we will know, how things will be working from a technical level we would like to get in touch, present and discuss this idea to selected upstream projects before it's fully implemented and discuss details about a possibility of not only import from but also export to upstream translations. We want to implement this as transparently as possible to avoid criticism / negativity from the upstream's side. I personally recommend using Structured or Restricted, assigned to Launchpad Translators, but developers often simply want to set translations to be open to as many people as possible. Or to set them as Open in the beginning in the hope to get more translations and then to Restricted so that they are improved later on. The truth is, as we know, that plan does never work, and they should rather: * To get more languages: announce that your project is translatable, rather than hoping more people will come to it if it's open * To get more quality: set permissions to Restricted and assign it to a known group of translators. Part of the problem is Launchpad setting the default permissions for any project to Open and developers never bothering changing them. I had a conversation with Danilo about this quite a long time ago, and I filed a bug about it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/664410 Without having looked at the code (so take this with a pinch of salt), I think it would be an easy bug to fix for someone wanting to get involved into Launchpad development. Looking at the Launchpad API, it seems that this information can be queried through the API: https://launchpad.net/+apidoc/devel.html#project (translationpermission) So In order to do that, we'd need to: 1) Write a simple Launchpad API script that: - Returns a list of all projects in Launchpad with translations enabled - From that list, filter the projects that have got Open translation permissions - Get the project name and the e-mail of the maintainer 2) Write an e-mail template explaining the benefits of *not* using Open translation permissions 3) Send the e-mail to all project maintainers or to a selected set we decide Before doing that, though, we should double-check with the Launchpad team if it's ok to mail project maintainers, or at least let the LP team know well beforehand. That would require: * Changes in pkgbinarymangler to create a whitelisting system to be able to selectively build * Changes in Launchpad to stop ignoring translation imports coming from universe packages and start importing any translation tarball that pkgbinarymangler provides. Note that for source packages with upstream translations sharing enabled in Launchpad, this might not be even necessary (is there any check to ignore sharing if the Ubuntu source package comes from universe?), but it will be to import translations for packages not supported by upstream imports sharing (i.e. any project not based on intltool) Background notes (from conversations with pitti and danilo) In order to import universe translations and ship them in language packs we need: * A trivial patch to pkgbinarymangler and get its tests updated. Estimated time 15 m. * A small patch in Launchpad to stop ignoring universe translation tarball uploads. * Research on how the amount of universe translations compare with those from main. Results: - We ship a total of ~1.25 GB (1252512038 bytes) of translation data as the sum of all language packs - We ship a total of ~0.85 GB (845977204 bytes) of translation data as the sum of all universe packages - This means universe translations have roughly 70% of the size of the translations we ship in language packs * A decision from the research action above on whether to ship separate language packs or not * If we decide to ship separate universe language packs, a (not too hard) modification to langpack-o-matic to generate them. Other notes: * IIRC, from the previous UDS discussion in Brussels, we'd only want to enable this for selected universe packages, those which are well maintained, since this would introduce a delta with those packages coming from debian (the delta being the .pot building rules). * The discussion at UDS-O was not about mass-enabling universe translations, but rather the context was about enabling them for some packages in which we'd want to have more flexibility with translations and be able to ship updates in language packs without requiring a main inclusion request for the package. An example is the nanny package, which OEM distributes in their images. * So as we're not talking about enabling all universe, a start would be to add a way to whitelist selected universe packages and decide to ship them in the regular language packs Implementation: * pkgbinarymangler: Stop building translation tarballs for universe packages, i. e. for packages which it does not strip. * pkgbinarymangler: Check XS-Ubuntu-Use-Langpack: yes header in debian/control. If present, force stripping/translation tarball building. This can be used for particular universe packages. Apparent cause: Huw replaced the ugly style=display:none in
lib/lp/translations/templates/translation-import-queue-macros.pt with a
nicer class=hidden.
But the code in lib/lp/translations/javascript/importqueue.js, in
function init_status_choice, tries to make the status visible by doing:
content_box.setStyle('display', '');
That won't work when the style isn't even set.
This is annoyingly hard to test for: you'd need a test with full-on TAL
rendering to catch it. Which is way overkill, really.

Hi coordinators, Just a heads up that I've packaged up the translator tools scripts I started writing quite a while ago. They are now built automatically on a daily PPA. They are mainly a collection of both user and admin tools to make the life of translators and translations coordinators easier. Here's a sample: What can you do with them? -- dpm@avenc $ dpkg -L ubuntu-l10n-tools | grep /usr/bin/ /usr/bin/translations-search /usr/bin/translations-get-uploads /usr/bin/ul10n-lp-l10n-upload /usr/bin/translations-get-review-queue /usr/bin/ul10n-lp-get-templates /usr/bin/ul10n-lp-get-team-info /usr/bin/translations-set-pot-priority You can execute any of these commands with the '--help' option and they should explain more in detail what they do. Some highlights: Translations-search is based on the idea of the old 'search' script in the old ubuntu-translator-tools package, but it's written in Python, uses the fantastic polib and it's a lot faster and easier to use: Search == $ translations-search hola # Will search the string 'hola' in your system's locale translations $ translations-search hola\b # Same as above, with regexp $ translations-search --mode both hello # Will search both in the original strings (msgid) and translations (msgstr) Set translation priorities in Launchpad === Translations-set-pot-priority allows individual or mass-setting of priorities of templates in Launchpad: $ translations-set-pot-priority -p 1900 -s evolution -p evolution # Will set the given priority for the specified source package/template combination $ translations-set-pot-priority -c oneiric, precise -f priorities.csv # Will set the priorities for the source package/template combinations in the given CSV file, for both Oneiric and Precise NOTE: if you try it and you are mass-setting priorities, make sure to use the --use-staging option the first time round, check that the priorities are the ones you were expecting on the staging server, and then run the tool against the the production instance of Launchpad. Fetch imports queue listings Translations-get-review-queue returns all templates needing review from a given distro's import queue, saving much time in navigating through import queue pages in the browser. It can help also seeing which uploads are duplicate entries. $ translations-get-review-queue # Will give you all Needs Review template entries in the currently active distro Other = Check out the --help. The other tools need some more testing and are not as mature as the ones above at this point.
