Bug description:
We've got a new show coming up in June: Mobile Asia Expo, which is an
event much like the past Mobile World Congress. There it will be key
to not only show off core apps, but also to display their native
language support, in particular for Simplified Chinese and other
  languages/scripts used across Asia.

In order for our translators to be able to do their work, we'll need
the translatable messages to be up-to-date. This effectively means:

  - Ensuring all visible messages in the app are marked for translation (i.e.
enclosed in i18n.tr() calls)
  - Updating the po/*.pot files as described in the README.translations or
po/README.translations files
  - Committing and pushing the changes to Launchpad

From then on, translators can take over :)

Title:
On ubuntu touch (unity8) some space are perfect for english, not for
  translated strings

Status in Ubuntu Translations:
  New
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hi,

I am using ubuntu/unity8 on a phone, and I have some issue since
strings are more and more translated in my language (FR - french).

The bug appear on some apps when some string doesnt' size the place it
was for the original english string.

This is a problem when the translated string is longer than the
  original.

  --
TL;DR: Some area in the unity8 design are well designed for small word. Not
for long word. And after translation this become more visible.
  --

  Some example of related project:

-"unity8 dash" ( it is the display name that is shown when the dash reboot
itself after a crash, not sure about its codename):
    * when you scroll down, you will see a software center orange icon with a
sentence at its top to explain you can get more app it is not possible to read
it all in english, it is cutted by the right edge.

  - some bottom panel (swipe from bottom to upper) has often this issue

   * Some third party app got translation (or even original string) into
the bottom panel too long. I don't know if this will keep into the
next version of the ubuntu SDK but I have a possible core app issue
  with the current version

   * Files manager : At this moment, the word "View" is traducted by
"Vue" in french, but it might be changed by its usual word (nautilus,
nemo, explorer.exe, firefox, most app...) have the word "Affichage".
There are plenty of language, Might be already like that with one of
  them.

-Selection/copy/paste (as seen on the messaging app with the keyboard):
   * when you write a message (sms) to someone, if you make a long tap you
have a popup that come up (select all/paste, not the copy/cut/paste. In french,
the word "Select All" is traducted by "Tout sélectionner". As you can see, the
translated string is longer, and it goes upside the word close to it "Coller"
(Paste).

2014-09-05 Thread Michał Sawicz
None of these strings come from unity8 directly.

They come from .desktop files of the respective apps (dialer-app,
messaging-app, ubuntu-clock-app, ubuntu-filemanager-app, gallery-app,
notes-app, ubuntu-rssreader-app) and the scope (unity-scope-scopes).

Can you please check that the translation strings are available in the
respective projects, or their .desktop files?

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1269456] Re: Infographic doesn’t seem to be translatable

Nothing unity8 can do here AFAICT, the strings come from the apps
directly. So we need to identify the apps that still are missing
translations for infographics and fix that there.

On ubuntu touch (unity8) some space are perfect for english, not for

(Paste).

po/README.translations files
  - Committing and pushing the changes to Launchpad

From then on, translators can take over :)

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1354325] Re: wizard: partially untranslated "Connect to "

2014-08-11 Thread Michał Sawicz
These actually come straight from indicator-network, where they need to
get translated.

Title:
wizard: partially untranslated "Connect to "

Status in Ubuntu Translations:
  Triaged
Status in “indicator-network” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
In the second step of the initial wizard after picking the wifi to
connect to, the bubble dialog comes up for the passphrase. There, the
'Connect to "", "Cancel", and "Connect" buttons are
untranslated; curiously, the "Show password" label of the checkbox is
  translated.

When doing the same operation later in the system settings app, the
dialog is completely translated. Thus I think the problem isn't
untranslated strings, but that the choice of language in the initial
step somehow doesn't restart already existing services under the new
  locale?

I attach a screenshot of the connection dialog from the initial
  wizard.

Bug description:
As we're past UI freeze, we need to ensure translatable messages are
up-to-date in Launchpad for translators to do their work.

I'm not sure if with the current setup this happens automatically on
  every build.

In case the translation template needs to be updated manually, could
  you please ensure that:

  - The rule to update the po/$APPNAME.pot file is run and the resulting
.pot file is committed and lands in trunk (or the branch that is used
  for the phone on 13.10)?

  Thanks!

The QT_LAYOUT_DIRECTION string needs a translator comment

Status in Ubuntu Translations:

Status in Unity 2D:
  Fix Committed
Status in “unity-2d” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I've noticed there is a QT_LAYOUT_DIRECTION string in the unity-2d
template in Launchpad [1]. From looking at some translations, I assume
that possible values there are LTR or RTL, but there is no explanation
  about that anywhere.

Having a comment on the line of code above the one where
QT_LAYOUT_DIRECTION appears would allow intltool to automatically
interpret it as a translator comment and show it in the template and
  in Launchpad.

  E.g.

/* Translators: QT_LAYOUT_DIRECTION refers to the direction of text: possible
values are LTR or RTL */

With that kind of information translators would know what they are
supposed to do with that string and avoid having invalid values there.
