[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1758684] Re: LP only imported a fraction of the snappy translation template

2018-06-26 Thread Michael Vogt
Thanks, its slightly mysterious why these files are truncated. I added
https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/pull/5402 and
https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/pull/5404 with better error checking
and extra canary checks to get to the bottom of this.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1414481] Re: ddtp-ubuntu po templates need to be created for vivid

2015-06-02 Thread Michael Vogt
Thanks and sorry that this took forever. I updated the branches and hope
that LP will soon import. You can approach me anytime on irc when this
is late (the issue here was a missing setting in LP to tell it what bzr
branch vivid belongs to).

The Unity Previews lens is not using DDTP translations for package

While application titles are translated, translations of the descriptions are
not fetched at all (while they have been translated for a while).

  Two questions :
  - in the lens, where are the titles fetched from ?
--The pristine DDTP (http://translations.launchpad.net/ddtp-ubuntu/raring/)
--the tweaked version for Ubuntu called app-install-data
(https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+source/app-install-data-ubuntu/+pots/app-install-data)
which doesn't cover all packages, and not their full descriptions.

  An example: XScavenger
  - Marked as translated in the DDTP both in Quantal and Raring:
http://nightmonkey.ubuntu.hu/#release=raring&language=fr&view=pack&repo=universe&isok=all&rownumber=100&sortpopcon=dsc&packagename=xscavenger&page=null
-Shown in English in the Lens
-Shown in French in the Software Centre
  -Shown in French in Synaptic

  Can it be fixed ?

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 1087593] Re: Translations for some category titles not shown on apps

2012-12-07 Thread Michael Vogt
Thanks for your bugreport.

This is indeed the case. It appears there is a mismatch between the client
strings and the software-center-agent server strings.
The client has "Role Playing" as the translatable name, but the server sends
"Role-Playing". One fix would be if the server would simply send "Role Playing"
in this case.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 434601] Re: Package descriptions etc display only in the language of whoever installed the OS

2012-07-03 Thread Michael Vogt
I sketched out how this could work in lp:~mvo/software-center/build-
i18n-for-all

If there are multiple languages supported s-c buids a xapian index for each of
them (that takes some time of course).
That works with the branch and if you run:
$ rm -rf ./data/xapian
$ PYTHONPATH=. utils/update-software-center --local
$ ./software-center

it will build multiple databases, e.g. for me:
$ ls data/xapian
ca de en es fr he hu it pt ru

What is missing is:
- cleanup when languages get removed
- ensuring that there is always a default fallback DB
- ensure to not rebuild if there are no changes in the app-install-data
- robustness

But the biggest problem is that the package descriptions are only availalbe in
the system default language. That is a problem
with "apt" and not software-center. It download only that. I add a apt task to
allow it having a option to download all supported
languages.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 971508] Re: string freeze exception for error message

2012-05-04 Thread Michael Vogt
This got fixed with the following upload:

sessioninstaller (0.20+bzr128-0ubuntu1) precise-proposed; urgency=low

  * New upstream release that fixes:
- merged lp:~aptdaemon-developers/sessioninstaller/multiarch
  LP: #899001
- Fix missing translation for the restrcited packages tooltip
  LP: #972427
- Don't translate debugging messages LP: #792436
- Fix a string substition if the sender_name of InstallPackageNames
  is unknown
- Check if packages are available at all and show a corresponding
error message if not (string addition) instead of a generic and
  no descriptive message

Title:
string freeze exception for error message

Status in “sessioninstaller” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “sessioninstaller” source package in Precise:
  Fix Released

Bug description:

To show the human readable name/description and information about possible
restrictions in use (patents or copyright) of to be installed packages by the
InstallPackageNames method, session-installer needs to handle the case if the
packages aren't available at all.

Currently in the case of not availabe packages session-installer
blindly calls aptdaemon and the user gets an aptdaemon message about a
  failed installation.

The InstallPackageNames method is called by e.g. brasero to install cd
  burning tools.

Therefore I would like to ask for a string freeze exception for
sessioninstaller that adds following error message(s):
  ...
  +header = gettext.ngettext("Could not find requested package",
+ "Could not find requested packages",
  + len(failed_packages))
  +if sender_name:
  +message = gettext.ngettext("%s requests to install the "
+ "following software package to "
  + "provide "
  + "additional features:",
  + "%s requests to install the "
  + "following "
+ "software packages to provide "
  + "additional features:",
  + len(packages)) % sender_name
  +else:
  +message = gettext.ngettext("The follwing software package "
+ "is required to provide "
+ "additional features but cannot "
  + "be installed:",
  + "The following software "
+ "packages are required to "
  + "provide "
+ "additional features but cannot "
  + "be installed:",
  + len(failed_packages))
  ...

  Thanks!

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 434601] Re: Package descriptions etc display only in the language of whoever installed the OS

2012-04-02 Thread Michael Vogt
Some thoughts about this:
- we could do build a language specific db only o demand, this would require a
aptdaemon call to do that
- we could build multple dbs for each langauge at install time of
app-install-data-ubuntu
- we would need to add a dpkg trigger somehow to add/remove DBs when languages
gets added/removed

string and a menu item. In
total three additional strings. Documentation is most likely not affected as
its just shown once.

No translated package descriptions for -updates repository

Status in Ubuntu Translations:

Status in “apt” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: apt

Package descriptions for packages in the -updates repository always
appear in English to the user in software-center or synaptic. It would
be more accessible to show translated descriptions which are available
in the users own language in this case.

  Example:
  $ LANG=C apt-cache policy gcalctool
  gcalctool:
Installed: 5.32.0-0ubuntu4
Candidate: 5.32.0-0ubuntu4
Version table:
   *** 5.32.0-0ubuntu4 0
  500 http://be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-updates/main i386
Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
   5.32.0-0ubuntu1 0
  500 http://be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages

  $ apt-cache show gcalctool
Above command returns English package descriptions for both versions while my
locale is set to Dutch (nl) and the file
/var/lib/apt/lists/be.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick_main_i18n_Translation-nl
 is available.

I would have expected a Dutch package description for the ubuntu1
package and an English package description for the ubuntu4 package in
  -updates.

The archive should have a i18n directory for the maverick-updates
repository or apt should be adapted to use the translations from the
release repository (maverick) so translated package descriptions are
displayed for updates too in software-center, synaptic, ...

A symlink in the archive from maverick/i18n to the maverick-updates/i18n
could be sufficient since the package descriptions remain the same and the
Translation files provide the md5 checksum of the english descriptions to match
with as described here:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2002/10/msg4.html
  I tested by copying
/var/lib/apt/lists/be.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick_main_i18n_Translation-nl
 to
/var/lib/apt/lists/be.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-updates_main_i18n_Translation-nl
and then translated package descriptions are displayed.

Bug description:
Have a look at the header in the screenshot, with Software Center
having been run with a Catalan locale.

It seems that the width of the "Our star apps" text in the header of
Software Center is limited to the width of the actual text in English,
making any longer strings "overflow" and be written over the tagline.

It would be great to either not limit the width (or limit it to a
greater value), or let the header grow vertically to allow 2 lines in
the heading. If that's not possible, at least a translator comment in
the string specifying the max. width would be really useful as a
  temporary workaround.

In any case, I expect this to affect many languages, as translations
cannot often be as short as the original English strings.

  Thanks.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 722366] Re: [ui-freeze] Need a link to developer.ubuntu.com somewhere

Title:
  [ui-freeze] Need a link to developer.ubuntu.com somewhere

Status in “software-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: software-center

User story: You are a software developer. Trying out Ubuntu Software
Center, you think "How could I get my application in here?" Somehow,
  USC makes this obvious.

So, as soon as exists, Ubuntu
Software Center should link to it somewhere. Where exactly that link
should go, I'm not sure yet. Maybe an unobtrusive place in the lobby
screen, or maybe an item in the "Help" menu.
