This would not be such a big problem it is today without being

assume there is always a bunch of those in addition to total
rewrites), quality translations that would still have a lot value
(either 100% match or something easily fixed to match the new form)
are being lost. This is especially big problem in ubuntu-docs, since
it has long strings, and a single small change anywhere will always
reset a big amount of translated text compared to application UI texts
that are usually much shorter.

With the new precise ubuntu-docs template, I see that while the total
number of strings have stayed roughly the same (+100 strings), the
number of untranslated strings have raised from 358 to 1086. What I
personally will do is:
- now very quickly save the current Ubuntu precise's ubuntu-docs PO file
- when the new ubuntu-docs gets to precise proper, fuzzy match the
downloaded PO file to the new template manually with gettext tools
- in case of simple word order / punctuation / etc changes simply
unfuzzy or make a little fix in the translation
- upload the new PO with "saved" translations back to Launchpad

But I'd estimate that not many of the languages have the luck of
someone doing this work. In the other language teams, there might be
frustrated people noticing that the hard work they've done
(translating ubuntu-docs is really hard work since there is so much of
it) has for a part disappeared.

Not that this would be a new problem of course, but what do you think
about the template hiding idea or do you have any other ideas to help
this problem (other than contributing to LP code)?

I apologize in advance for the considerable amount of grumbling below.
But I think we have big problems.

I think Launchpad should be entirely disabled for docs translations.
The lack of fuzzy matching makes Launchpad almost useless for anything
but UI translations. The alternative is to use e.g. a bzr archive to
maintain the translations. This requires more technical knowledge, but
we (translations coordinators) can help individual translators with
it, and actually get the job done. We are qualified to use tools like
bzr, msgmerge and other things to make sure that work is not lost. But
right now I (as a coordinator) am quite powerless to stop the waste of
time. The only thing I can do is to not recommend that people work on
certain things. I cannot even put a big red sticker on the ubuntu docs
page on Launchpad saying "don't translate this". I have only indirect
means of communication (e-mails) around Launchpad. This makes
everything very complicated and not something I look forward to
dealing with.

There is only one thing which is worse than not getting a voluntary
contribution due to it being too difficult, and that is to get the
contribution and then throw it away. Because that contributor will not
come back.

I and others have previously requested fuzzy matching and some other
IMHO essential features on Launchpad, but there seems to be no plans
to implement any of it or even recognize the importance.

So please disable ubuntu docs in Launchpad.

with what we have.


Unfortunately. As long as we just play along "make do with what we've 
got" and continue to contribute despite the obvious loss of work and the 
apparent disregard for volunteer contributor time, nothing will ever 
change (at least if the past 3 years are any indication).

Because I firmly believe in the translation of Ubuntu Desktop Guide, I
translated most of the Oneiric version on LP. And when I click F1 on my
desktop (Oneiric), I am so proud to see that almost everything is in
Dutch now.

Hi Pierre,

I'm glad you find the stats useful, thanks :)

Right now they are designed to work with source packages included in the
default Ubuntu desktop installation, which is why the short descriptions
appear in them, but it might be tricky to include the long package
descriptions in the stats, as they are not shipped as a source package.

In addition to that, and while I agree that it would make sense to add
them, I'm a bit reluctant do do so for the following reasons:

- They are a huge set of translations. While logically they belong to
the default distro installation, the big weight in terms of the amount
of strings could severely distort the current stats. The weight in terms
of quantity does not match their weight in terms of visibility when
comparing it to the rest of the desktop components. I.e. we will never
get 100% accurate stats, but I want to present stats that are the best
approximation we can have to:
  - Give users and OEM an idea of how well translated the distro is
  - Give translators focus on what's more important to get translated
- Some of the original package description strings are not very good, so
as a translator I'm often inclined not to translate those until they've
been fixed in the package
- It's hard to translate the long descriptions' strings until this
Launchpad bug [1] has been fixed.

I'm sorry to provide an answer on the "not for now" side, but if you or
someone else would have any ideas or would like to contribute to the
code [2], any help will be really welcome. Thanks!

 Thanks for the feedback. You might be hit by the same issue the Danish
 team was:

 Localized pages are served as .html., as per the
  sent by the browser when requesting the html page. I've
 noticed that for some language codes, the server uses the extension to
 guess the MIME type and serves them as a file whose MIME type matches
 that extension, instead of just text/html.

 I believe I've fixed it for Danish, Polish and Turkish now, but any
 confirmation by someone from those teams, or any help from someone with
 more Apache experience will be very welcome!

Hi Simos,

Sorry for the delay in coming back to you, I've been away until today.

The cloud where the sites live was affected with some bugs whereby the
IP addresses got disconnected from the servers. I'm told these have been
fixed for good and that there should not be more disruptions of these kind.

I apologize for the downtime, but no data has been lost and both the
stats and localized docs sites are back online and up to date. I'd like
to provide them on a more permanent home for next cycle, but remember
that as mentioned before, these are experimental for now.

If you notice any other issues, feel free to mention them on the list or
report them as bugs [1].

Hi Redmar,

Those bug reports are very useful indeed, many thanks for investigating
and reporting the issues.

For translations-related bugs, I'd also recommend adding a bug task for
the Ubuntu Translations project, so that they are recorded as l10n/i18n
bugs. You can do that by clicking on the "Also affects project" link on
a bug, and then typing 'ubuntu-translations' as the project it affects.
If there is another project selected for the bug, simply click on
'Choose another project' and then type ubuntu-translations.

Request for Docs Freeze Extension for Serverguide

Hi,

The Documentation String Freeze is scheduled for Thursday, but the
Ubuntu Server Guide won't be ready by then.  I know it's debatable
whether the Serverguide project should strictly follow String Freeze but
I figured I better be safe than sorry.  Although there is much material
that has not undergone review we have also received some very
significant contributions, mostly in the form of 'LXC Containters', 'MD
Multipath', and 'Openstack'.  We are also working to improve the PDF
version of the guide as there are some non-obvious buglets that sneak in
during the build.  A small but important change is that we want to make
the XML validation step part and parcel of the actual build.  It was
found that some people were omitting this step which led to some
non-trivial headaches.  Anyone wanting to lend a hand in at least
validating existing material please head on over to:

late addition of strings in update-notifier

Dear translators,

Let me open with an apology.  We are well past string freeze, yet here I am
coming to you to let you know that I am introducing new strings into the
default desktop.

In my defense, I think we have a good reason for it;
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876298 is a critical bug that causes Ubuntu
installations to fail if you choose ubuntu-restricted-extras at install time
and there is any sort of network problem downloading the extra software.
Since the only way to effectively fix this is by adding out-of-band handling
for data downloads, we need an out-of-band way to let users know if the
download has failed; and this inevitably requires new strings.  However,
these new strings will only show when the download has failed - and they
will be shown *instead of* the user getting a failed install.

So on balance, I think untranslated pop-ups that the user can usually safely
ignore are better than translated pop-ups informing you that the install has
failed.  The release team agrees with me, and I hope you do too.

Still, I apologize for the lateness of this change.  We've known about this
bug since 11.10's release, and more should have been done to get the fix in
sooner.

In any case, the consequence here is that there are new strings for
translation in the update-notifier package.  Since these translations are
for .desktop-style files within the package, if you want to have these
translated for 12.04.0, the translations must be available by the
NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline, which is this coming Tuesday.

We should be able to include updates with further translations as an SRU
following 12.04's release.

Why not make it part of the build process itself?  It's one less command
to type and it could have really helped in the last few days.

Another problem we're having is the build of the PDF.  It was found that
tables are not displaying properly and that footnotes in HTML lists will
not even show if there is not a certain version of the 'fop' package in
use on the build machine.  New issues, which I don't quite understand
yet, emerged yesterday in a particular branch contribution.

I'm CC'ing Doug Smythies as he has been putting in a lot of effort to
analyze and resolve most of the PDF issues.  Doug, please chime in if
you have anything to add.

To the extend an exception is required (I don't think applying the freeze 
makes any sense because the server guide isn't shipped in the archive as a 
package), exception approved.  It's not going to affect anything.

However, I saw that gnome-control-center doesn't want to assign "Alt" 
(and even showing the value) alone. Normal, it's not done for tapping :p
So I need to add the tap support and force it to show alt. It won't be a 
10 minutes hack in the end ;)

This is certainly doable, here is what need to be done:

- There is some compiz work needed by compiz developer to do that 
(Tim?).
- Also remember that it means it needs translation, so you need to 
ping the translator team about it (John? ;)).
- Also, please ping the 2D guys as they are making an option as well, 
but this would mean they would have to read it from gconf and 
gsettings and I'm unsure it's easy for them to revert to gconf for 
one setting at this point.

[UIFe] Default 12.04 wallpaper

This is certainly doable, here is what need to be done:

- There is some compiz work needed by compiz developer to do that (Tim?).
- Also remember that it means it needs translation, so you need to 
ping the translator team about it (John? ;)).
- Also, please ping the 2D guys as they are making an option as well, 
but this would mean they would have to read it from gconf and 
gsettings and I'm unsure it's easy for them to revert to gconf for one 
setting at this point.
