Could anyone just confirm that the string has to be
translated as well? I'm just a little unsure about it, since it looks
somehow technically like a key or text. Unfortunately I don't know in
which context this string is used.

Thanks, Jochen

Unfortunately not all strings of Gwibber are translatable yet:

I really would like to see a completely translated Gwibber application
in Lucid, but I don't know if this is possible.

Re: Translating Debian Package Descriptions

2010-02-18 Thread Jochen Skulj
Thank you, Gabor and Michael for all your explanations. That cleared a
lot since I in deed searched the wrong template for the given term. I
hadn't used Nightmonkey before and it's really a great and helpful tool.

But while thinking about the whole issue another question popped up in
my mind: do we really just change the translation of Debian package
description just because our users and we don't like it? I mean, after
all these translations are a kind of upstream translations, aren't they?
Wouldn't it be therefore better to talk to the Debian translators than
just changing the translation in Launchpad? How do other Ubuntu
translators handle this?

I also found out how to get translated package descriptions: I just had
to run sudo apt-get update. So again: thanks for your help.

Cheers, Jochen

Translating Debian Package Descriptions

2010-02-17 Thread Jochen Skulj
Hi,

I am just trying to understand how those Debian package descriptions
which are shown when using apt-cache are translated in Ubuntu. Naively I
assume that these package descriptions are imported from ddtp.debian.net
into Launchpad, can be translated or adapted in Launchpad an these
Launchpad translations will be delivered to the users via language
packs. Is this idea correct or am I totally wrong? If I am wrong I would
like to know how this process works.

Currently we - the German Ubuntu Translators - have this problem: a user
reported that the German translation of a package translation which are
shown by apt-cache is inappropriate. While taking a closer look on this
issue we found out two things:

(1) The translation the user told us can't be found on Launchpad. The
user criticises that in the package description of aircrack-ng the term
"WEP/WPA-Knacker" is used. Although this seems to be the case in
ddtp.debian.net the translation on Launchpad [1] is different and
doesn't contain "Knacker".

(2) On our machines the package description are not translated at all. I
verified this on two machines running Jaunty and apt-cache only shows
English package descriptions. How can it happen that some users have
translated package descriptions and others not?

Maybe somebody of you can help us understanding (and hopefully fixing)
this problem. I would be really grateful for some help. Thanks in
advance.

Cheers, Jochen

The German translators team uses a mailing list [1] and the wiki [2].
One of our most important communication tools is a kind of ToDo-List in
the wiki [3] which we use to coordinate our translation and QA tasks.
Beside this we document our guidelines, workflows and general
information in the wiki.

We also have a section in the German ubuntuusers.de-forum [4]. Here we
inform the users, answer question and a lot of users uses this section
to report translation bugs.

Currently we discuss using IRC, but we have no experience with this.

I took a quick view at this issue and it seems to me that Launchpad
(suddenly?) handles the changes that Moritz made just as suggetions and
not as Current German. I really don't know what reason caused this
change but I think that no one approved a different translation after
Moritz had fixed the bug.

Please excuse the trouble we may have caused you. I re-fixed the
inaccurate strings and hope that everything is fine now. Thanks for your
patience.

Difference between »bluez-gnome« and »gnome-bluetooth«

2009-04-03 Thread Jochen Skulj
Hi,

can anyone tell me the difference between bluez-gnome in Launchpad [1]
and gnome-bluetooth in the GNOME upstream [2]? I've got the impression
that all strings in bluez-gnome can also be found in gnome-bluetooth
although I haven't checked this for each single string.

I think it may be a problem to translate bluez-gnome via Launchpad since
it may result in different translations for the same strings. Can I just
upload the gnome-bluetooth translation as an bluez-gnome translation to
keep both translattions in sync or do you think that's a bad idea?

Thanks, Jochen

Will there be a concrete time schedule for the post-release updates? I
would I be greatful if such a time schedule could be set up or if at
least all future steps would be announced on this list.

Besides facing frustrated users I see another big problem in motivating
those translators who just joined the translation team. We have some of
such translators; in fact the German team mostly consists of new
translators. They invested very much effort and did a good job in
updating the hardy translations in hope that these translations were
imported into intrepid. If these translators see that their work will
not reach the users at release date they might have the impression that
their efforts were wasted and leave the community. It would not be the
first time that this happens.

Just to say »we do some updates later« might sound a little bit elusive
to really disappointed users and translators. I think if we were able to
(officially) announce »Ok, we had some problems, but we fix that until
November 20th.« we would have a little chance to preserve a little bit
of trust and motivation (which are key factors for having community
contribution).

Just my thoughts on this.
