Hi Simos,

Not that I know of. As I was mentioning above, you can fetch them
yourself from there or from the main popcon website.

Ideally, they could be fetched e.g. daily and stored in a database, so
that historical views could be presented. I believe it shouldn't be too
hard for example to set up a django site that did that. If it just
started focusing on translations, I think it would be an easy and nice
project for someone wanting to learn and create something useful for
communities in all languages. Anyone up for giving it a go?

As it is now, only the current files are available from the above website.
I keep copies of http://popcon.ubuntu.com/main/by_inst since last July,
however it would be more beneficial if there was an official back somewhere.

I simply used LibreOffice Calc to plot the graph, using historical
values derived from
http://popcon.ubuntu.com/main/translations/by_inst

It was pointed to me that we may need to interpret more carefully the numbers.
Can you all give input for the following?

1. This is the description of the numbers that PopCon provides:

# is the package name;
# is the number of people who installed this package;
# is the number of people who use this package regularly;
# is the number of people who installed, but don't use this package
#regularly;
# is the number of people who upgraded this package recently;
# is the number of people whose entry didn't contain enough
#information (atime and ctime were 0).

2. Here is the line for Greek, as given by the PopCon website (above URL
language-pack-el-base  17646  1500 12065   126  3955 (Language
Pack Maintainers)

which means
  17646: number of [unique computers] who installed this package EVER
[when was PopCon first made available?]
1500: number of [unique computers] who use this package regularly [DEFINE?]
  12065: install but not use regularly [DEFINE?]
   126: number of [unique computers] that upgraded recently [How
is recent calculated?]
3955: number of [unique computers] that somehow did not provide
usage information. [What does this mean?]

3. You can run 'popularity-content' manually, and you get the output
printed on your screen (it is not sent).
You simply run
   /usr/sbin/popularity-contest

For 'language-pack-el' it says

'popularity-content' source code and do more tests.
It would be great if someone could compare with their system and build
on the above, and add more answers.

I have been following the popcon stats in order to figure out the real
number of Greek installations of Ubuntu.
There should be a multiplier that you apply to the value that popcon
gives you, and you get the total installations for your language.
If you can get a random group of Ubuntu users in your country, you can
check their computers and verify
how many of them have actually enabled to send these popcon stats.
Then you can adjust the value that popcon gives you.

Even if your random group is not random enough (for example, there are
advanced users who tinker every option),
then you can use this ratio to establish the lower bound of Ubuntu
users for a specific language. For example,
if half of your random group uses popcon and installed the langpack,
then AT LEAST the double of your popcon number corresponds
to the minimum of Ubuntu users for the said langpack.

That's correct, they are only available if the user has explicitly
agreed to submit anonymous stats to the popcon server.

I seem to remember there used to be an option in the installer, but I
think it's not there anymore. Does anyone know how the acceptance to
send popcon stats is done these days?

thought that the LanguagePack statistics could give more accurate numbers,
