I always download everything I translate and keep a copy. And I feed
Virtaal's TM every time too. There is no such thing as a superfluous backup.

Re: So, now it looks like we will never get a phone, ever

2017-04-08 Thread Michael Bauer
This seems to be a bit of a pattern, sadly, as if translator time did
not matter. First time I started pulling hair over this was when I found
out that Launchpad a) does not sync translations with upstream projects
and b) it is littered with dead project which are still "open" to
translation.

All of this does is not conducive to cultivating a happy localization
community.

The lack of communication from "above" is actually becoming a bit
worrying too, I had that happen with Google In Your Language and a few
others, usually followed by a blogpost by a third party informing the
community the project is dead. Maybe I should back up the Launchpad
translations for our locale...

Nokia did not. The Problem with this phone was that it was never a phone:
"first things first". If the phone used to function properly as a phone (NOKIA
3210), there would be a platform to develop it further (to Nokia N52). Ubuntu
Phone was like a Maseratti without wheels: convergence yes, but You can not
hear a call or an incoming message nor synchronize Your contacts.
This is already the second time when I see how all the hard work goes down the
drain: You didn't mention Ubuntu is going back to GNOME. All we did for GNOME 2
was killed with the immature Unity idea (I tried to work with this environment
twice and one day I decided to switch to MATE-Unity was like a step back from a
101-keyboard to a 12-button cellphone).
All what someone does over there (Canonical) is splitting the community (GNOME

Well, that's a tinker phone. Nice for geeks like us, but for the average
user, not so much. I am talking about a phone for the average
computer-illierate who doesn't know any more about computer than swipe &
tap. We really need something out-of-the-box.

Even as a computer literate, I estimate that I'l need to spend at least
half an hour on their homepage doing some RTFM before I'll even
understand how to get the thing.

So, now it looks like we will never get a phone, ever

2017-04-06 Thread Fòram na Gàidhlig
Hi all,

Canonical is axing the developement of the phone and tablet:

https://insights.ubuntu.com/2017/04/05/growing-ubuntu-for-cloud-and-iot-rather-than-phone-and-convergence/

Same story as with what Mozilla did to us: We spent years developing a
phone, localizing and creating a keyboard and a couple 100$ on devices
out of our private purses for testing, only for the project to be axed
before it had a chance to take off, because the "Internet of Things"
seems to be more attractive.

We can also forget about getting our languages on iOS or Android,
because the manufacturers will decide which language are allowed on each
phone, not the user. So, if you're not one of the big 10-20 who happen
to be living in the wrong country, tough luck.

After Adaptxt was axed and we had to move to Swiftkey, iOS isn't even
allowing our keyboard locale.

So, this is another VERY BLACK day for our languages, and a sad day for
all those developers who spent so much effort into giving us a free (as
in freedom) phone.

I hope this mail reaches the powers that be.

GunChleoc
