Strange strings in app-install-data

2011-03-26 Thread Milo Casagrande
Hi fellow translators,

while I was looking at the translation for app-install-data in Natty,
I found some odd strings in there.
For example string numbers like:
1846
1848
1849
1850

Does anybody have an idea if those strings are really supposed to be there?

Ciao.

Hi,

It seems that those strings are used by Unity :

app-install-data

2010-02-25 Thread Peteris Krisjanis
Question: if I will translate app-install-data, how Software Center
will do search? Will it search my translated strings? Will it search
also english strings? Or it will search just english or just my
translated strings?

Cheers,
Peter.

It searches both (original English and translated strings), as far as I
 know.

Hi Peteris,

I'm used to translate app-install-data into catalan language. I search in
software center for strings (in English) that need translation if i need
further explanation about what a package does so I can find a proper
translation, and when I find a translation in catalan language that can be
improved I search for it in software center either in catalan or in original
english. I 'm pretty sure that software center finds the same package either
if you search for it in original english or in your own language (I assume
it's been already translated!). At least it worked for me every time I've
tried:-)

Regards,

Sergi

That is: translators, if you see app-install-data-ubuntu becoming
available (it still isn't), translate! It will patch up a rather
visible i18n problem seen by everyone eg. installing codecs via
gnome-app-install. The problem and the current fix were discussed at
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/app-install-data-ubuntu/+bug/254628
which I reported two months ago.

Hi all. This is now translatable at:
 https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/app-install-data-ubuntu/+pots/app-install-data

Since gnome-app-install is the most easy way to install applications,
now it's a great time to start translating the all too common English
strings there into variety of languages.

I'd especially note the gstreamer strings quite near the beginning.

Please keep in mind that the translation only affects the names and
descriptions shown in gnome-app-install and not the actual menu entries
of the installed packages.

AFAIK there is currently no infrastructure to include the translations
in the corresponding packages or send them upstream.

Cheers,

Sebastian

In addition to Milo's question, is there a Debian equivalent to this?
What I mean is, do we have to take care of coordinating the
translation with Debian, or is this simply a package where Ubuntu is
upstream?

Regards,
David.

This template should be considered as part of the langpacks, so please
complain here if you don't see it in the next packs :).

The upstream is in Ubuntu, as far as gnome-app-install is upstream in
Ubuntu.

 AFAIK langpack

Right, tested this and the translations seem to work just fine if
they'll just get into langpacks.

Ie. you can test the translations by downloading as PO from Launchpad,
and doing msgfmt -c -v [downloaded_translation].po -o
app-install-data.mo ; mv app-install-data.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/[yourlangcode]/LC_MESSAGES/
