Cool!

Though xplanet is for the map, not a blog planet (I have got the right

I have ssh access to the server and actually installed a planet this
morning but didn't announce it as I was hoping to get
planet.ubuntu-uk.org subdomain setup for it first. You can find the
planet at http://www.ubuntu-uk.org/planet/
it hasn't been finished yet and currently just has default settings and
some feeds which were in the default config (though i added my blog ;)

However in getting the subdomain the admin of the box tells me that it's
developing a hard disk problem. So i'm just going to hold off spending
time on it until we know the situation with it more clearly.

Thanks,

That would be brilliant -- I'll be trying for Linuxworld, but considering the
amount of leave I just put in for I'll probably not get away. A quarterly
Ubuntu-UK meet would be very good.

Despite my unhealthy fascination with all things Google (see
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-uk/2006-June/000457.html for
some of my reasons), in the intrests of something that works and all
in one place being better than something that doesn't exist or is

If in the future we move on to a full separate ubuntu-uk.org site, we
could vote on a change to a different map system.

Do you have ftp access to ubuntu-uk.org so that we can install xplanet
(http://packages.debian.org/stable/graphics/xplanet) on there? (To

[ubuntu-uk] video convertion

2006-09-08 Thread Norman Silverstone
I wonder if anyone can help me. I am trying to find some software which
will convert video files from one format to another especially from
quicktime to .avi or .jpg. Also, I need to able to convert video files
produced on a digicam to .avi. There is no problem doing this with
windows software free to download but, so far, I have been unable to
find the equivalent which will work with Ubuntu. Further, I am not very
good at using a terminal but I will if I have to.

I will happily explain, in detail, to any one who may be interested,
what I am trying to do and why. Suffice it to say I can do all I need
under widows for free.

It's licenced under creative commons.

If you're selling items then you need a trademark licence, which is

Its a very good point. But since theres no harm in getting a price or in

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu UK Meet @ LinuxWorld London - Wed 25th Oct 2006

2006-09-08 Thread Jono Bacon
Hi all,

On Wed 25th Oct and Thu 26th Oct 2006, the LinuxWorld Expo and
Conference will be happening at Olympia 2 in London. The two event is
packed with stands, exhibitions, a .org village and more.

I will be at the event, and I figured this could be a great opportunity
for us all to meet up and flesh ideas and plans for Ubuntu UK to make it
a real kick arse LoCo group. :)

When we meet up it would be good to grab a cup of something delicious,
and discuss some of the following:

 * the strucuture of Ubuntu UK.
 * areas of interest, such as events, advocacy, education etc.
 * up and coming events to have an Ubuntu presence.
 * possibilities for distributing Ubuntu CDs and other merchendise.
 * anything else... :)

So, I am proposing we meet in the .org village on Wed 25th Oct at
2.30pm.

Can anyone make it along?

I agree, I think that if the wiki makes most sense to ease updates and
whatnot, lets use the wiki and maybe get the ubuntu-uk.org domain to
re-direct to the wiki. Its better have updates on a slightly less sexy

The thing about this is that the loco-websites are generally focused on
giving support in non-English languages, and if we want to get a website
going, it is important to figure out what we are actually going to put
on it. It's pretty good to work in the wiki as much as possible, because
all Ubuntu teams work there (see ubuntu-au) and it is a great way of
sharing ideas and keeping track of what everyone is doing. So if we want
a website, we should focus on what it would actually do.

For example, Ubuntu chicago have a very nice site indeed, based on
Drupal (http://chi.ubuntu-us.org/), but in fact it is basically an
alternative to the official Ubuntu website with links to the Chicago
team for people to get into the group and get local help.

Nice idea, although again much of this might overlap with articles which
would be great on the Fridge and shared with the whole international

[ubuntu-uk] Getting the group going

2006-09-08 Thread Jono Bacon
Howdy folks,

I am a fairly recent addition to the group, and it seems that the group
is just getting going and getting organised. I figured it may be useful
to ping out an email with some ideas of stuff to do, and maybe some
people can stand up and volunteer themselves.

So, here are some ideas for things that I think could be useful for the
group to do:

 * Website. Get the website up and running. Would be nice for the
website to match the look and feel of existing sites, and maybe we could
work with another LoCo team to borrow their design. As an example,
ubuntu-fr have a pretty nice site. Might be worth posting a message on
loco-contacts to ask if anyone can send us a theme for the site.
Naturally, it depends on what CMS is running the site.
 * Map. I think it is really important that we have a map of the UK and
people can say where they are. This helps regional people to meet up and
have a pint or six. I am sure there are little clusters of Ubuntu users
in different parts of the UK. Again, other groups have made maps, so
lets talk to them.
 * Events. There are quite a few possibilities for events. Not only do
we have computer fairs across the country (see the Infopoint project
(http://infopointproject.org/ for details of groups that demonstrate
Linux at computer fairs). We could also organise sprints, hack-fests,
installfests and more. :)
 * News. It would be nice to post UK Ubuntu news on the website. Y'know,
details of schools moving to Open Source, interesting events with Ubuntu
speakers and teams, success stories and more. :)

Getting a LoCo team going is hard work, but I think if we all pull
together we can make ubuntu-uk a real standard for LoCo teams. :)

Thoughts?
