The best thing to do is look at the kernel version and use that as your
measure of whether something is supported.

Dapper has 2.6.15
Edgy has 2.6.17
Feisty has 2.6.19

I good place to have a rummage is the [0] LinuxTV site. It details
specific supported models [1] and loads of other stuff.

Cheers,
Al.

Hi Guyan,

My suggestions is that if you are short of money but need a computer
for basic stuff, like internet browsing and word processing, you can find
bargains on the Ebay and also at the Computer Fair in central London (near
totternham court road). Then you can install Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu as your
main OS or as dual boot. Ubuntu usually runs faster than Win Xp if your
computer doesn't have high specs.
If you are planning to get a laptop, check this site for compatibility.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam?highlight=%28CategoryLaptop%29#head-ed3bfabb533fe8032b87405aab057e3f5835f724
I haven't finished testing my laptop in every aspected suggest by the
LaptopTestingTeam, but i can garantee that the Toshiba Equium A100-147 works
just fine with Ubuntu 6.10. I haven't installed it in my other laptop, a IBM
Thinkpad T40, but the live CD runs smoothly as well.
If you need quick answers, try the www.ubuntuforums.org website.

Good luck.

Are there particular laptop brands or components which work well with

Thanks a bunch

In general, most hardware works fine. Hardware that doesn't is usually
the exotic stuff that developers do not own, and hence cannot write
drivers for. I'm sure there is a list somewhere however.

Thanks for your input chaps. I had the obvious idea of asking around at work
far sample sticks to try out, so with your information and with a trial
stick from a colleague I should be OK. I'll try to remember to let you know
which one I finally get to work on Edgy.

I've got a Twinhan MagicBox, and it works perfectly. Running it in Xine.
