I haven't used bochs itself for some time now. It seems DOSEMU / WINE / QEMU
fulfil all my emulation requirements.

What is it you want to use Bochs for?

I think this sounds pretty good for a short demo.

In my opinion you have a good voice for this kind of thing.

I am no audio expert however so don't know what you can/should do to improve
that side of things. Maybe we could ask some other prominent podcasters for
their input. Now, where will we find one I wonder..

I wish I'd had your idea about leaving some space before I went
ahead. But never mind - I made / 30Gb, swap 2Gb, and /home got the rest
of the space. I guess, if need be, I could split the /home partition,
which is the last on the drive, and move a directory tree. I'm hoping
this won't ever be necessary; but I'd be grateful if you could send the
link if you think it might help.

Hi Ian,

One thing you could look at is using LVM, which can resize the
partitions later. It's probably not the best thing to try if you're
new to Linux, especially to use for the / partition.

The other thing you can do is leave some empty space at the moment, in
case you guess wrong. You can always move a directory tree (such as
/usr) to another partition - it's quite easy when using a Live CD, but
you can do it when the partitions are mounted (but it takes some
fiddling) - if you want to do the latter, I can dig out a link that
explains what to do step-by-step.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Podcast Test Recording 1

2007-05-14 Thread Paul RJ Mellors
It’s been an aim of mine to have a go at creating a UK based Ubuntu
Centric pod cast, currently it’s only in planning stage, see wiki,
however i’ve now had a go at recording something, as a test to see what
i actually sound like, it’s unrehearsed, unplanned, unscripted, totally
made up on the fly crap :) but here it is any way. Hopefully as i’m the
first, more decent recording artists :) will have a go at doing there
own demo so we can see who’s voice would be good. Please don’t laugh to
hard i’m not a professional. I’ll also add it to the wiki in a new
section so others can link to their own test. While i was recording it
though it did come to mind that it’s very difficult unless scripted to
record on your own, so if any one wants to get together at some point [i
live in Nottingham] let me know, we can bounce a few ideas and possibly
record something.

See http://www.paulmellors.net or

I've just installed 7.04 on a similar one-year-old Dimension 5150 with
nVidia card driving a 17" Dell monitor that prefers a resolution of 1280
x 1024. But Fiesty will only offer max 1024 x 768. This is the same as
it gives me with a 15" Hanns.G monitor via a Radeon 9000 card on an
ancient Compaq AMD Athlon machine.

Any suggestions for improvement would be most welcome! (Though, to be
honest, at my age, 1024 x 768 is probably easier for my biological
optical system to resolve!!!)

Thanks, that's a useful link. I thought this had to be somewhere!

Nvidia graphics is a configuration option when buying the laptop. Since
I don't need really top spec 3D graphics, I figured the Intel on board
chip set would be enough.

There is a laptop testing team which brings together reports for what
works on different machines:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam

There is a report for a Dell Latitude D820, but it seems to have a
different hardware spec from the one you're looking at as it mentions
use of nvidea graphics drivers:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellLatitudeD820

Intel graphics cards are usually well supported as Intel releases their
own drivers, I'm not sure about the wireless card though. Luckily with
ordering things to be delivered to you (I'm sure there is an actual
term for that but can't remember it ATM) i the UK you have a period of
time (I think either 7 or 14 days) to change your mind for any reason.
So you can send the machine back if anything isn't supported (or if you
decide you don't like the colour...).

Excellent. It's often mentioned (if only in passing) by the Guardian's tech

more (at least in the 'Ask Jack' section) on how to install a million pieces
of software to keep your windows machine clean and clear.

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu in Newspaper and on TV

2007-05-14 Thread Dave

Ubuntu was mentioned in an article in the Daily Record (Scottish paper) last
week, though you guys might be interested so I scanned it:

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/entertainment/therazz/games/tm_method=full%26objectid=19043516%26siteid=66633-name_page.html

Also just the other day on the BBC's tech show 'Click' the presenters went
to South Africa to report on distance learning, Ubuntu was mentioned and
there was a short interview with Mark Shuttleworth. Quite an interesting
watch, you can view it online here:

Enjoy.

I have a Samsung Q35, which has that wireless chipset (ipw3945). It worked out
of the box with Kubuntu.

HTH,

[ubuntu-uk] Dell Latitude 820

2007-05-14 Thread Tony Arnold
I'm about to order a Dell Latitude D820 laptop and I will, of course, be
putting Ubuntu on it!

I'm wondering about support for some of the hardware. If anycone can
confirm or otherwise if this kit works out of the box, I'd be grateful.

My two main concerns are:

Video: Intel 950 chipset; 1920 x 1200 LCD screen
Wireless: IntelPro/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g

If I can find someone local who already has this machine, I'll see if
they will let me boot from the Ubuntu CD.

Or is there somewhere I can find this information?

Regards,
Tony.

Same thing happened to me (could only get a resolution of 800x600 using
nvidia drivers), but I tried it again a week or so ago, and issue has
been resolved.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Off the fence and ready to join in!

2007-05-14 Thread David Morley
Welcome Dave.

The screencasting team is in need of help. There is a lot to do get
onto Alan Pope. https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-screencasts They can
explain what to do etc. Hope that helps.
