It's actually quite usable, providing you install VMware tools with
it. As a rough guestimate, expect maybe 60-80% of "native"
performance.

I've not used VMware apart from server type stuff, so I don't know of
the USB capabilities. I do hear that the latest VMware workstation's
USB has been improved drastically. Can't harm to give it a go :-)

I don't think this is possible. IIRC, VMware can access
devices/partitions directly, but I can see Windows getting perpetually
confused when switching between two different hardware configurations.
Maybe someone else will be able to say they've done it successfully.

What Intel chip is it? If it has has "Intel VT" capability, then you
may also find success installing KVM - it's open source as well,
whatever that means to you :-)

[ubuntu-uk] Window XP on Ubuntu

2007-07-12 Thread Skippy
http://efficientpc.co.uk/videos/vmware/

if I was to install windows XP in VMware, what would the processing power
hit be like? Would it be possible to run outlook in it, without it becoming
painful,

The reason I want to use outlook is because it is the only way I am aware of
that allows me to use my Orange M600 WM5 phone with full syncronsation
support. (would VMware do anything silly with the USB)

Also is it possible to dual boot to the VMware image? So I can run the same
XP install on its own.

The laptop I want to do this on is a higrade, 1.4ghz Intel (802.11b only),
with 512mb ram.

Downloading this morning's updates from the repositories
(archive.ubuntu.com and security.ubuntu.com) seems very slow. Is this
just me, or is everyone experiencing this and does anyone know why?

I've signed it and forwarded it on to my local LUG.

I was reading the recent story on The Register about this. Seems like
the comments are 50/50 against and for Linux support.

I'd agree with the comments about releasing the instructions on how to
implement an Open Source player. Heck, even if it does have DRM at
least it will be supported by more than just Windows.

Done.

Marwell Zoo have Gibbons that are adoptable. They have a summer
'promotion' on of being able to adopt the family of 4 Gibbons for £250 -
or £50 individually. This would get a name (Ubuntu / Ubuntu-UK)
featured on a “Thank You” board in a zoned area near to the animal
enclosure.

I think this is easily achievable, and offers good value for money.

Kind Regards,

Doesn't look good - just re-contacted them and they are not keen on
sponsoring with a name. Apparently most arrive @ the zoo with names
already, and where they are not - the keepers like to name them. :(
