Thanks Chris,

I will do.

I'll post feedback on how it goes on Saturday evening/Sunday morning.

[ubuntu-uk] Power Management

2007-08-09 Thread Ian Pascoe
In the previous postings about the Dell launch of Ubuntu boxes a question
was posed about power management etc.

Have a look see at the following article - it's fairly hefty but it gives
you all the detail you want and probably do and don't need!

Hey Rob,

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/Leaflets

There are a few submissions up there from different people. I think
they're all pretty much OK for distribution. If I where you, I'd just
pick whichever one/s you liked the look off.

Cheers

You might also want to check that in your language options you have En-gb as
default. For some reason, even when I'd selected my location as London
during install on Feisty, my default language was American...

I had this in the past. It turned out to be the keyboard layout. If you go
to the keyboard layout thing in preferences and make sure you choose the
"top level" United Kingdom entry, don't be tempted by any of the further
options below "dead keys, dvorak etc".

This fixed it for me.

[ubuntu-uk] missing apostrophe and quotes

2007-08-09 Thread michaelweaver
I think I am having problems with writing Apostrophe and Quotes when
text editing or writing emails.
I think it might be that my keyboard is trying to assign Non English
characters so I cannot type anything that contains an Apostrophe or
Quotes.
How do I reasign to get the Apostrophe and Quotes?
The machine I have is an E-machine.

[ubuntu-uk] Leaflets

2007-08-09 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

On Saturday I will have a stand for the local Linux User Group at a
Hospital Radio Fun Day in Exeter. We will be giving out copies of
Ubuntu and Kubuntu and also copies of a custom version of The Open CD
7.04 (which has been customised with the branding of the Devon &
Cornwall LUG).

Now I was wondering if any of the leaflets which have been worked on
in this list are ready for public consumption?

I ask because we only have a limited supply of Ubuntu/Kubuntu CDs but
I am hoping to be able to print off a few leaflets (around 50 to 100)
to distibute on the stand.

Is there any inparticular I can use, or should I just pick one of the
existing ones?

Ta,

Rob

well yes and no.

We do have a forum , but we really want to have it integrated into the
mail list. There is however nothing to stop people using the forums,
nothing at all in fact, but we would hate to miss out on announcements,
invites, discussions and ideas on the forum or maill list because of the
duality of the communication medium.

As an old newbie to linux (76 ish) I prefer mailing lists & usenet to
Web Forums (sorry if the terminology is wrong) I'm sure you know what
I mean.

As a long time Windows/DOS user I still find linux difficult.

I've been using some of my essential programs for over 10 years,
Quicken (finance) and Sidekick (contacts)

(amongst others)

I've tried to use wine and vmware to run these programs using linux
but for me it's too difficult and not worth the effort.

I'll keep following the discussions.
Thank you all that there are still alternatives to Windows & MAC.

Vic

Its my birthday today (I don't believe it!) and I'm a 30's baby and
suffer as you do. most probably for the same reasons

Never managed to get wine and Adobe working together - they just sit
there and "glower" at each other but never actually talk

VM would be  nice and being able to instantly flick (click) from
windows to Ubuntu - perhaps some of the youngsters might help one day!!
