 Hi all,

I visited the Pembury Tavern, the venue I suggested for the Gutsy London
 launch party.
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/GutsyReleaseParty

It's a nice large pub, one room but with a spur to the right that we
could ensconce ourselves in. No music, jukebox or piped; no tv; very
 good beers reasonably priced.

Travel is quite good; no underground nearby but plenty of buses and
Hackney Central / Downs overground stations are close. There is some
parking (but not advisable if you're drinking):

 Interest whetted?

 Hi all,

What programs do people run on a new machine that's booted off the
Live CD to check that everything is working/supported?

It may be obvious, but I check for things that I know to be broken, to some
extent, in the current, installed, version. For me, this was Kaffeine and
the need the for the cx88-dvb module to be loaded manually. In 7.10 I can
say it works out of the box.

[ubuntu-uk] package removal.

2007-10-09 Thread norman
I had 2 versions of Gimp on my machine and I only wanted one, so I
removed the old, unwanted package using synaptic. I then tried to
install a plugin in the remaining package. Imagine my amazement when not
only was the plugin not installed in the version of Gimp remaining but
it was installed in the old version which had miraculously reappeared.

What must I do to ensure that the old version stays well and truly
removed, please?

Cool, glad I work in a school so hopefully can get a demo unit from RM.
Would be prefect for whipping out on the train and doing a bit of work.

I am sure it will be sales to schools only so possible people will miss out
on this device.

They said it was gonna be £200, £169s not bad, but still not as good as the
US price of $200.

Yes, it is. And there are some other sellers, too. And you can run
Ubuntu on it (it comes with Asus' version of Xandros).

But how functional is 4Gb flash drive? (I suppose with 3 USB 2.0 ports,
you could always cart round a 100Gb Seagate portable drive to run
seriously big apps! ;-) )

But which version was at $200? IIRC they announced there would be a
couple of different revisions with different storage sizes (and I'm sure
one of the higher spec models had a model built in too).

For a portable machine running Linux you can't go wrong :-)

I can't help but wonder though that Microsoft might try and persuade RM
to bundle the machines with something like Windows XP Embedded (due to
the data storage constraints - I certainly doubt a standard install of
Vista would fit).

I'll stick one on my christmas list and hope for the best.

Rob
