Sorry, looked on the site a bit more, for the LCD component you might
need to install LCDproc by using the following command:

sudo apt-get install lcdproc

Well according to the web site, support is included in LIRC from 0.7.1.
I just installed Lirc and it's installed 0.8.2.

To install Lirc I used the following command from a terminal window:

sudo apt-get install lirc

You then have to choose the remote type, there are about 5 different
SoundMon devices on there. Not sure which one is the right one. If you
don't get the right one try the following command to choose another one...

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lirc

Hope this gives you a bit more to go on.

That's good. I have a Netgear USB adaptor which came free with my
router. It didn't work on Edgy or Feisty but I thought I'd try it for
on Gusty just for the sake of it and it worked really well!

I love pleasant surprises like this. It's great for when my wireless
occasionally stops working on my Dell laptop.

[ubuntu-uk] [OT] Data loss from the Child Support Agency

2007-11-20 Thread Matthew Macdonald-Wallace
Hi all,

Many of you may have heard that Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs have
lost the details of 25m people including bank details and various other
information.

I've just uploaded a quick guide to securing data - with an emphasis on
picking good passwords - to my company's website @
http://www.cariss.co.uk/

It can be found under the news section on the front page.

Hope this helps some people.

Cheers,

Matt.

Okay, it's getting you to compile a kernel module (driver) and for
that you need the linux-headers-generic package installed under
Ubuntu, as well as the other programs they mention. Once that's
installed you should be able to follow the instructions they give,
typing out the commands given in bold.

Scary!

To be honest, I'm using older versions of Office (when I have to use
Office) so didn't know about that problem.

I wonder. If Linux desktop continues to be taken up well, will
Microsoft produce I version of Microsoft Office for Linux (like they
do for Mac). That'd make compatibility a little less of an issue.

[ubuntu-uk] Netgear Pci Adapter

2007-11-20 Thread davisjo
Hi to the group,

I have written to the group a few times about the Netgear
PCI adapter. I worked really hard to install this card with Ubuntu but to no
avail. I researched forums, posted questions. I also did a clean install after
mixing up the software. The only distro I found that worked with the card and
was easy to configure was Mandriva. I am not really keen on Mandriva and went
back to Ubuntu. I will use it without the internet.

Today I found a Wifi USB dongle lying in a draw and thought "why not plug it
in" Ubuntu found it and configured it. In a matter of minutes I was on line
and sorting out the email and listening to the Archers.
With XP the connection was weak, now with the usb dongle signal strength is
about 95%

I am going to download all the repositories later, can you tell I am pleased

Googling for "hulu linux" took 30 seconds to find out that Linux is
indeed claimed to be supported. It's a flash based thing.

If you then poke the site for another 30 seconds and discover the blog
you'll find an episode of The Simpsons which you can't watch because
"Unfortunately this video is not currently available in your country or
region. We apologize for this inconvenience".

So it looks like they have only licensed the content for certain
territories like North America right now.
