No, ifconfig -a shows no device (excl eth0 LAN)

The kernel shows something, then "device not found"

And I can't check the kern.log yet.

Hello, Kris.

Have you tried:

sudo ifconfig -a

Also see if the kernel detected it by looking at the output of:

dmesg

Alternatively, try:

 more /var/log/kern.log

If the kernel loads the module it reports it, but if the hardware is not
found it will jsut be ignored and no device will be created.

I think WiFi is the Achilles heel of Ubuntu acceptance: I've just used
the fwcutter package in the 'restricted' software manager to install the
Broadcom firmware on an Asus laptop. I also had to enable the Windows
driver 'wake-on-LAN-after-power-off' option which, by default, DISABLES
the Realtek wired connection under Linux! (this is a dual-boot machine).

All working nicely under Ubuntu 7.10, with Compviz 3D effects now!

Very shiny :-)

Best wishes,

Tony.

When running modprobe, it doesn't pass an error, in fact, it seems to load
the driver, but it doesn't appear in ifconfig.

Hello, Kris.

Hmm... are you sure your system is loading the kernel module?

Try using:

sudo discover -f "%m\t%M\t%V\n" all

and:

sudo lshw -C network

This should give you an idea about what hardware Linux can detect on
your system. If the module is not loaded try:

modprobe module_name

Where "module_name" is the kernel device driver module for your NIC.

Best wishes,

Tony.

Hello, Al.

Have you tried WiFi radar from the Universe:

sudo aptitude install wifi-radar

Your problem sounds a bit like what happens when I disconnect the wired
connection from my laptop after booting with it connected. I have to
disable the wired connection before the WiFi connection works using:

ifdown eth1 # wired connection

Then restart the WiFi connection using:

ifdown eth0 # WiFi connection
ifup eth0

Alternatively, I can connect using WiFi radar.

Changing the subject, I've now got 7.10 (Gutsy) running on my iMac :-)

Anyone else using this ancient 'unsupportable' PowerPC technology?

BTW, I'm running the IBM PowerPC version of Java 1.5 OK in 640MB RAM.

I've looked at the DIY iMac 1GB upgrade instructions on the web + I
might give it a go:

http://www.macworld.com/2003/08/features/15fpimacupgrade/index.php

Just slightly concerned about the heat transfer seal being broken when I
pull it apart. Anyone else done this on the 15" LCD G4 iMac?

Best wishes,

Tony.

The 3945 is supported in Ubuntu, my Toshiba laptop has one.

It has an issue that I _think_ is down to network manager in that it refuses
to associate with an AP when first booted, however it works if I use the
wired connection first.

Yes. It had at least one bbc audio broadcast a while ago (2005?), I
was really impressed. It seemed a bit like a prototype OLPC
philosophy at least in its learning philosophy. I think an Indian IT
Minister of the day ran it, not sure.
This was in the dark old days when linux was not quite so widely used
as it is now, and the computers were windows.

It was an IT Education project not an operating system project, which
showed that children, of many ages, could and would get to use a
computer without any instruction at all, in a very short time -
typically minutes rather than hours. The key seemed to be that the
Director had the following approach:
When the computer was first set up, there would be a crowd of kids
around, curious. He would address them and ask 'Who can ride a bike? -
all hands went up. 'Who taught you to ride a bike? - lots of shrugs
and 'I learned myself!' Then he would say 'well, this (computer) is
like a bike'.Then he just went away!

In minutes things were being done with text and simple graphics, with
a mostly cooperative interaction in the multi age kids groups,
including tiny kids getting under the crowd trying to get to the
keyboard. The same thing happened when they wen to remote villages
where people had not seen a computer before.

Apart from the OS, I thought that philosophically it led straight to
OLPC approach in many ways.

At the time I was running an Age Concern Internet cafe and noted how
our own education culture led so much to people expecting to be told
and guided to do things.
