We could go for guerrilla warfare and attack PC World...

"Ubuntu Ready"...

Only problem is that they wouldn't see the funny side... we'd probably be
done for criminal damage :-(

LOL. I did notice on this new case, it doesn't appear to have the
little square indent for a case sticker anymore. In fact I don't think
I've seen a case with anything like that for a good few years. Just
Microsoft Vista (in)Capable and Vista (not)Ready stickers.

Maybe I should buy a bulk load and start replacing the stickers on PCs
at work.

If you can ping from the client through the gateway and your router and
get a reply back, then basic routing seems to be working.

Your comment above implies it may be a DNS problem. If you type

  host www.ubuntu.com

in a terminal window, do you get a sensible response?

Is the client getting its IP address and DNS information via DHCP from
the gateway? What has it provided for the address of the DNS server? If
it's the gateway, then you should check the gateway is configured to act
as a DNS proxy, or you could set the DNS address manually in the client
(edit resolv.conf) to the address of the ISP's DNS and see if that helps.

Just some things I would look at.

Regards,
Tony.

[ubuntu-uk] Shorewall internet sharing problems

2007-12-12 Thread Michael Rimicans
Greetings.

Can any one show me the error of my ways with the following:

Have set up shorewall on a gateway system to provide security and net
sharing duties.
After banging my head against a wall it has finally allowed me to
connect a networked computer through to the wifi router.

Now heres where the problem lies.

I'm able to connect to the router (192.168 blah blah) with no problems
but when I try to surf elsewhere nothing
 happens.

I'm able to ping the isp's dns server and get a reply and have tried
placing the address in the resolv.conf file on the gateway with no joy.

I await your words of wisdom

I'm getting the problem with an ATI Radeon Mobility, using the free

This is fine if you don't care about shutting the app down cleanly when
you switch to single user mode or shut the machine down. A well written
script in /etc/init.d will take care of this.

I think more importantly, what video card are you using - let me guess,
NVidia? There has been a problem with this for ages, since the old
compiz, through beryl, and now into Compiz-Fusion (Which ubuntu calls
Advanced Desktop Effects)

There have been many a work-around in the past, some which still work,
some dont.

There general consensus seems to be to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
file, find the device sections add add the two "AddRGb"'s as
follows:

//
Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"
Driver "nvidia"
Busid "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "AddARGBVisuals""True"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
EndSection
//

I give that about a 10% chance of working (sorry)... however, and this is the
part that i throw out the the community... in beryl-manager
there was an option to set something to "copy". Can't remember what
it was, but it worked. Does anyone know what i'm talking about,or if
there is a similar option somewhere in compiz?

I get the same thing on my laptop, without playing about much with
Compiz effects.

Every time I reboot, I have a couple of saved windows/apps opening up
as part of the session - a GEdit window and a gnome-terminal, and
maybe a Nautilus directory window.

Each of these appears 9 times out of 10 with the title bar behind the
top panel. Fortunately, I knew about Alt-dragging the windows, so I
can move them. But wherever I leave them, they often (always?)
reappear behind the panel.

I'm running Gutsy with the GNOME desktop, Compiz effects enabled, and
it's patched up to last weekend's releases.

Cofion/Regards,
Neil.
