Another fantastic opportunity trashed, by a single idiot who didn't
think about the target audience...

Agreed wholeheartedly, but...

Having recognised that such an opportunity has been created, is it not our
(Ubuntu-Uk) and/or Canonical's responsibility to try and engage with the
companies concerned to educate them as to their mistakes and perhaps regain
what could be a very good thing for the free software market?

Just a thought.

2007-12-20 Thread Pete Stean
Grip is a good alternative to Soundjuicer, however it offers almost
too many options as opposed to Soundjuicer's too few! Very good
results though, and I find it to be considerably faster when ripping.
Will probably take a bit of trial and error to set up correctly
however... have a google for good settings

I think that may be the route to take.

Any suggestions on what would be a good choice of ripper to give the
 necessary bit-rate control?

The sound juicer app that came with gutsy doesn't appear to provide that
 level of control.

[ubuntu-uk] Starting a PSU

2007-12-20 Thread Alec Wright
I've got an old PSU from a computer that died, and im trying to start
it, does anyone know how? Do I just poke a wire between the purple
wire (which it calls PG SIGNAL) and the black wire on the
motherboard cable? I've already tried putting a 100R resistor across
it, to no avail. I'll try putting a wire across it though if people
think that'll work. I'm trying to use it as a non-computer power
supply.

In principle - yes very much I think. I asked at my local Tesco
catalogue desk a while back about the PCs, and got some blank looks. I
did not have enough time then to follow it up with looking for the
particular entries, but will try something in future weeks I hope.

I would be happy in principle to attend a QA or a basic help session
there if there was any supporting interest from Tesco. But it is early
days yet.

Point taken. I see it as more of an 'opportunity' than anything else.
It is quite obvious that Tesco see some advantages in the products
although it is also obvious that most relevant and key Tesco employees
do not actually know much if anything about Ubuntu. If voluntary help
could be used I would be delighted to help. Does anyone have any
central contact with Tesco?

I did open a facebook account a while back because of ubuntu activity,

[ubuntu-uk] XML Authoring Tool

2007-12-20 Thread Ian Pascoe
Guys and Gals

Does anyone have any recommendations for a cross platform, Ubuntu and
Windblows, app that can be used to view, edit and create standard v1 .xml
files?

I've decided that this is going to be my Xmas self training project , and
found lots of resource on writing XML using a standard text editor but
thought that if such a tool existed, I might be able to find out if I got
the concepts right etc without having to write an app myself to read write
the data.

Cheers

If it is this article
(http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/dec/01/facebook.socialnetworking)
you are referring to, it doesn't say that Facebook have pulled Beacon,
only modified it to stop posting purchasing information publically. It
sounds like they still use the system with the same basic deal with
their advertisers.

I've been using XML copy editor, it's basic but has plenty of
tools/features and does its job well. It's also very actively
maintained - I once reported an obscure bug and the developer got back
to me in less than 2 minutes to say that he'd fix it for the next
version!
