Actually looking at this...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xinerama#Dual_display_X_without_Xinerama

I think dual screens without Xinerama but two independent window
managers might do the job.

Basically what I want to do is send the second monitor output to an LCD
TV (but not have a complete MythTV installation) which I can just play
videos on.

Thanks for the tips Steve, I'll have a read up.

My answer wasn't fancy cases or rack-mounting. My answer was bog
standard cases with 5 quids' worth of kitchen cooker hood filter! Cut to
size and velcro over the *inside* of the air intake grilles. We used
Velcro to make it easy to replace the filters; we replaced them every 3
months, but then it was a limestone quarry, so in a loft you could
probably get away with once per year.

You can get cooker hood filters from Currys or Comet. Five quid will buy

That shouldn't be the case, it doesn't matter what access point it is
they are all compatible, but the device itself may not have been
working properly... It may have crashed when trying to send a dhcp out

wireless day, and a system reboot and a router reboot seems to clean
it up a little.

Or there are other ways to get the same result; most (good) IRC networks

/var is where the logs go, as well as MySQL databases and Apache's
default document root - I always partition this separately to prevent it
filling up the entire disk should something suddenly bloat in size. The
only other volume I tend to keep separate is /home for obvious reasons,
in my experience /usr is unlikely to fill up unless you specifically
tell it to (ie. installing loads of new software).

Good luck. The basic installation will probably only take you 20
minutes or so depending on the hardware, you also have the option of
installing a standard server or a LAMP server (which is a standard
server plus Apache, MySQL and PHP - saves a few minutes installing
them separately, but you might want to go for the standard server
option).

Maybe someone else might want to advise on partitioning the drives, I
can never remember if /var should have more space than /usr. IIRC
it's down to what you want to use the server for.

Maybe. If it's anything like the old Dell machines we have at work
(OptiPlex GX100/GX110 machines) the on-board video will cover most if
not all tasks. An extra video card could maybe give you dual head. My

have an old 14 CRT monitor attached which rarely gets used. Most of
the time the server just runs.

Is your loft converted? If not do you have problems with dust? or heat

It does get fairly warm in the summer but the server has been working
okay. I installed a couple of fast noisy large fans blowing on the hard
drives to keep it cool which I can barely hear.

If you could afford it, maybe a MiniITX system might be an idea if you
 have a lack of space?
