Thanks Dave,

I'll give it a try in the morning.

Hi Rob,

These settings took quite a long time to work out, i've actually edited
the entry name to make it ubuntu-uk mailing list friendly - as I found
it somewhat frustrating.

I'm actually using a three mobile phone rather than a dedicated dongle,
but i would expect the settings to be the same.

[Dialer three]
Init1 = ATZ
Init4 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","three.co.uk"
Modem Type = USB Modem
ISDN = 0
New PPPD = yes
Phone = *99#
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Username = guest
Password = guest
Baud = 460800

HTH

Do delays on the Northern line count towards this limit? :P

I was ill for the last one, but if there's a London event happening
again (can't take the time out to travel far - exam season very fast
approaching) I will be there.

May I suggest somewhere with easy tube/train access? Assuming I could
attend I would be coming all the way from Harwich and would have to
try and beg some Colchester friends (you know who you are) to let me
stay on their sofa (as the last Colchester train is a lot later than
the last Harwich train).

[ubuntu-uk] 3 Mobile USB modem

2008-03-21 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

My dad has just taken out a new mobile contract on Three and as part
of the deal they gave him a 3 Mobile Broadband USB modem (Huawei E220).

Now I've been googling for a while now about this modem but I can't
find any specific instructions on how to get this modem working in the
UK with the 3 Mobile network. The nearest thing I have found is
either for 3 in Australia, 3 Ireland or for T-Mobile.

The modem is detected and is assigned to /dev/ttyUSB0 and I get the
following in dmesg when I add the modem:

[ 485.40] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
[  485.56] usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[  485.564000] option 2-2:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
[  485.564000] usb 2-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0

I've created a fresh new wvdial.conf file containing the following:

[Dialer Defaults]

Phone = *99***1#
Username = username
Password = password
Stupid Mode = 1
Dial Command = ATDT

[Dialer three]

Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 460800
Init2 = ATZ
Init3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem

When I try to dial it I get the following:

WvDial<*1>: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
WvModem<*1>: Cannot get information for serial port.
WvDial<*1>: Initializing modem.
WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATZ
WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATQ0
WvDial<*1>: Re-Sending: ATZ
WvDial: Modem not responding.

I'm stumped now. It's the first time I've played with anything like
this before and I can't find a definitive how to for this modem, 3
Mobile Broadband in the UK and Ubuntu 7.10.

Has anyone managed to get it working?

Ta,

Rob

[ubuntu-uk] Hardy Heron Release Party

2008-03-21 Thread Dave Walker
Hi all,

It's that time of year again, to talk about release parties.

Hardy Heron (8.04) has now reached 'Beta' phase, and with stable
announcement being planned for April 24th we need to organise the
festive celebration.

Ubuntu-UK had a very successful Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) party[1]. This was
held in the Pembury Tavern, Hackney[2]. This was quite a good location,
Linux friendly and free wifi.

I expect some disagreement on the location, and therefore suggest
multiple parties - one up north, and one in the south. I travelled
around 4 hours to attend the London one, and consider that as far as I
can reasonably travel without a /planned/ overnight stay.

I will buy drinks for anyone who travels over two hours to attend the
celebration. :)

Kind Regards,
Dave Walker

Hi there,

As far as I know there isn't an engineering specific version of
Ubuntu. It's an interesting idea though.

What sort of software would you expect to find in such a distribution?
There's a list here which might give some pointers:

I am a mechanical engineer and I am writing to ask if there is an
engineering version of ubuntu.

There appears to be lots of other variations but I have not seen and
engineering specific version.
