[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Demo Day

2008-04-26 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

Just a quick message to say if you're going to the Ubuntu Demo Day today
hopefully I'll see you there. I'll be the one wearing the blue flagship
polo shirt.

If you're not able to go, I'll be taking my camera along and getting
lots of pics and I'm sure others will too.

[ubuntu-uk] Low cost, low usage broadband suppliers

2008-04-26 Thread David Restall - System Administrator
Hi

is anybody aware of a UK broadband supplier that has a product to
replace a standard dialup ?

I'm building a new desktop for my mum and she doesn't have broadband.
I'm going to set her up to use dialup but this is not going to be ideal.
What would be a better solution would be a low cost, ADSL connection with
a lower download speed and/or a bandwidth limitation, say 1M/s 2G/month.

The problem with dialup is the frequency of updates to Ubuntu - it's not
unusual to get 20MB of patches/packages, this is a pain over a 56k modem
but doable over a broadband connection.

All the broadband suppliers have wonderful offers on the face of it,
but they are for three months then they go up to 15-20 month. This is
massive overkill for my 'old dear' who only wants to pick up and send
the odd email and sometimes surf the net. She's not into mega-surfing
for hours on end, audio content or downloading massive movies (it took
me long enough to get her to get a digital TV and she still only watches
BBC News 24 on the digital side and she uses the analogue for the other
terrestrial channels). I wouldn't call her a Luddite, but you know what
I mean :-)

Regards,

David

These, at under a tenner a month, are the cheapest OK ones I've come
across. Newnet seems to be well regarded.

I'm looking for _CD_ case inserts for Kubuntu and Ubuntu. I got the

i don't understand why A4 are so hard to find - I mean, they do want us

Still looking

Hi,

I'm not sure if this helps. I created some A4 CD sleeves for last
years Software Freedom Day. They are anything but professional, but
can be printed off on a normal printer using A4 paper, and folded to
make a CD case.

Hope this helps.

Hi Cieran
Thanks for the offer will take you up on it if I can't get official ones
(I'm getting 'Not Found' from your odt link at the moment - so I can't
see artwork)
As this is an LTS release I wanted to do an 'official' looking copy but
didn't want to have to 'diy' it
I would have thought Canonical would have provided this.
still looking though

Technically they _do_. The artwork on the DIY Marketing page is the
stuff you want. It's just that you need to be able to scale it to print
at the right size.

Cheers,

I've only read this quickly so I could be talking complete rubbish,
but would it be possible to display it at 100% and then do a screen
shot to effectively copy and paste the image into a graphics program?

I would have suggested 3 Mobile broadband on PAYG for £69 + £10 per
month top up, but as you say she's not technically literate so maybe
that might be a bit confusing buying a top up.

I'm not sure if you'd find any broadband (at least ADSL) cheaper than
about £13 a month. You might be worth checking if she's in an area
where it's enabled for Talktalk Free Broadband, but then Talktalk don't
seem to be very good at setting up paperless billing or so I've heard.

Just had a quick browse, O2 offer 'up to 8 meg' for £7.50 if you're an
O2 customer (even on PAYG) for 'unlimited' or £12.50 if you're not.
It's a 12 month contract with free connection, but it is dependent on
what exchange she's on (I presume because they use LLU'd lines).

Anyway, might be worth checking out.

Actually there might be something in this - setting screen res (dpi)
high, scaling100% to allow for reducing and printing at c.300dpi
However the pdf is tres peculiar - it allows for folding back on itself
so I'd have to crop and re-assemble.
Cheers Lucy I'll give it a go tomorrow.

To scale it It print on A4 I'd need to split a page and it won't let me
do that. I think copying, cropping and re assembling will be the way to
go as in Lucy's suggestion. However Canonical should hasve made one
suitable for A4 and even letter IMHO
Thanks all for your input
