Hi,

Great show once again.

There was some discussion of apt vs. update-manager, and I wanted to add
a couple of comments to that.

update-manager does a few things over and above what apt does. Firstly
it is given some knowledge about Ubuntu, so, for example if you have
ubuntu-desktop installed when it runs it won't allow it to be removed,
whereas apt may remove it if there are conflicts or similar. This means
that when you upgrade you will stay with Ubuntu and get the new stuff
for this release and all the following ones.

Another thing it does is run some extra scripts after upgrading all
of the packages. These do distro-wide transitions, and as such can't
go in the packages themselves. This could be things like cleaning up
after the python 2.4 - 2.5 transition, or removing obsolete packages.
This is more important for LTS-LTS upgrades, as they require more
things like this.

You can use apt to upgrade if you wish, and you will still have a
working system. However you may have to do some things manually which
update-manager would do for you.

Note that if you are the sort of person that upgrades at alpha/beta time
or even earlier then update-manager will buy you very little.

Thanks,

James

All is about to change with the Lite-On

which claims to write DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 20-speed. It's also
compatiable with 8-speed DVD+RW discs, 6-speed DVD-RW discs and dual-layer
discs.

It doesn't say exactly what spec it is but it does have a 40GB hard
drive, 4 x USB2 ports and it comes preinstalled with Xubuntu. I can
only assume it has something like an AMD Geode or VIA C7 CPU in there.

Still for £99 it's a really good price and would make a lovely little
Linux box that as show on the site can be mounted on the back of a TFT
 monitor.

Looks about the same size as that aleutia pc, i.e. it can be monitor
mounted, but with an included 40gb hdd rather than running from a cf
card and half the price. Tasty indeed.

Yep, no doubt you can upgrade the hard drive and memory, and with USB2
on there it would probably happily run a big external hard drive and
printer.

Just what I need for my new printer/scanner/copier. I was a bit wrong
on the price though, it's £99 plus VAT delivery, so no doubt nearer to
about £130.

[ubuntu-uk] A Possible Experiment

2008-05-08 Thread Matt Daubney
Hey all,

I brought this up on the IRC channel earlier and thought I'd put it to a
wider audience.

A few days ago, I saw someones blog post[1] which described them giving
their better half a machine with Ubuntu on and asking them to do some
simple tasks. The results from which was quite interesting. My thought
was why isn't something like this done on a larger scale. I propsed this
to the IRC group this morning and was pointed to a similar thing Novell
do[2]. Now based on this, there's no reason why we couldn't do something
similar (if not better).

The idea is generally that we create some tasks, from write a letter to
Trudy, to connect to a wireless network, and then record someone doing
said task. We'd need to video them doing the task, possibly the desktop,
and their facial expression. This could then be fed back into the design
of the user interface and the general user experience. It would also be
a way to get some publicity.

Now I'm not much of a gui person, so I'm not sure what information would
be useful to the people that are, but even just talking to people and
finding out what they think is right or wrong (even if their method of
completing the task says otherwise) could be useful and/or interesting.
If any gui people can think of useful data they'd want, then please let
me know!

We have had the idea of finding people who haven't used a computer
before, but that might be more difficult in this modern age. The idea of
testing the three major operating systems with different people is also
not a bad one.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, or is it just a wild pipe dream
that wouldn't be of any use to anyone?

I'm open for to all comments and suggestions, please do say if you think
it's a terrible idea and point out why.

-Matt Daubney

Just had another look at their web site and found this...

http://www.viglen.co.uk/webmail/5star-offers.html

It says to call 'your account manager'. Might be worth a call to them
to see how much a single unit is on it's own. My guess though if it's
going to be nearer £200, a MiniITX based PC might work out cheaper.
