Make sure it has Digital inputs. I tried a bigger monitor at work that
only had Analog inputs, and went straight back to the Digital one.

I'd personally buy a Samsung Digital TV, has VGA input and
particularly impressive colour range. I use a 32" widescreen one for
presentations and it works well (I know you don't want widescreen, but
I'm sure they do other ratios too).

You also have the benefit that if you're waiting for something to run
or download you can always check News 24 to see what the weather would
be like outside if you weren't chained to your PC, lol!

[ubuntu-uk] OT: Monitors

2008-09-15 Thread Ian Pascoe
Hi Folks

Being at the leading edge of the rear of the crowd, I'm starting to look at
chaging out my trusty CRT monitor to one of those new fangled LCD thingys!

I don't mind doing the research, but would appreciate some pointers to what
people consider reliable and trustworthy makes, as it's been a number of
years since I have had to look at the monitor market.

My only constraints are that it's >= 17", not wide screen, and has good
contrast ratios.

Help appreciated

Thanks

Re: [ubuntu-uk] scanner

2008-09-15 Thread Bruce Beardall
Hi Norman

I've got a HP Deskjet F380 printer/scanner combo and if memory serves, I've
had it since round about Dapper Drake time. From that time until now,
Ubuntu's never had a problem with either printing or scanning. So much so,
that my other half prefers to print from my laptop as hers (running XP with
official HP drivers) tends to freeze after just a couple of pages. Almost as
if it's made for Ubuntu. Couldn't be happier although, in fairness, I've yet
to put it through a heavy workout so don't know what it would be like in,
for instance, a busy office environment. From my point of view, though,
couldn't be happier.

Regards

Bruce

(PS - current price seems to range from £23 - £30)

[ubuntu-uk] DVD & Xvid playback with zoom/crop facility?

2008-09-15 Thread Andrew Oakley

I'm looking for DVD & Xvid playback software with a zoom function, under
Ubuntu 8.04. At minimum, the ability to zoom in to a 16:9 video which
has been recorded as a 4:3 aspect ratio with black bars at the top &
bottom ("letterbox"). Ideally, the ability to zoom smoothly in small
increments to whatever level I wish.

VLC has this ability (it calls it "crop") but unfortunately its DVD
playback ability is very poor - doesn't seem to be able to cope with
moving forward/backwards through the DVD nor navigating to chapters.

MPlayer, Totem and Xine do not appear to have this facility at all,
although they do play back DVDs very well.

Has anyone got any alternative suggestions, or config advice to fix the
above?

I recorded a whole bunch of widescreen programmes from Sky+ onto my DVD
video recorder, for playback on holiday abroad, only to discover they'd
been recorded in letterbox format. Since I have a widescreen laptop,
this meant not only black bars at the top & bottom (letterbox) but also
black bars at the sides (padding 4:3 to 16:9). This drove me nuts!

I tried the session options but it does not turn up there
unfortunately, I think dropbox are planning to add more advanced
options soon although it is still in beta.

Hi,

I'm just guessing here, but it probably installs an autostart session
entry.

If you go to System->Preferences->Session, is it listed in "Startup
programs"?

If so, then you can disable it on each account where you don't want it.

If you want to disable it by default then you need to find the .desktop
file, it may be in /etc/xdg/autostart, where you can edit to add

X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false

to the end. I don't know how to do this for other DEs.

You could also talk to the dropbox people about having a better system
in place to handle this.

Thanks,

James

Hi Fintan,

I am also currently using dropbox and find it is great although it is
missing some obvious options such as this one. As far as I can tell
there is no way to specify which users should be using dropbox from
within dropbox itself.

I think your only hope here is to hope some clever soul has a
suggestion that will make the program only run for specified users from
within ubuntu.
