I also went to see Genius, I will definitely be visible and I'm fairly
sure I was wearing my Hardy t-shirt that day but can't be certain. I
will be wearing my hardy t-shirt to the IT crowd though, even though it
wont be seen.

I don't think that Alan can win on his own podcast :P

You honestly wouldn't believe the lengths to which we go to ensure the
competition winner is a) not one of us (not actually that hard to do),
 b) random.

Buy me a pint at the Intrepid release party and I might just divulge
 the details. :)

When is the next podcast arriving anyway? It seems like ages since the last
 one.

We had a scheduling problem last week so it was recorded at the
weekend (a week late). It should be out this week.

(It's all recorded, edited and mixed, we just need to all listen to
and check the preview mix, decide on an episode name, encode it,
upload it, sync the mirrors and create the web pages, then announce
 it)

 Cheers,
 Al.

Last Friday, on my way home from work, I spotted a cyclist with an
Ubuntu rucksack at the Peak Lane traffic lights on the A27 between
Fareham and Titchfield. I think that is the first time I have spotted
an Ubuntu in the wild :-)

My local bus company gives names to all its buses - one is called
Intrepid. Does that count?

Wonder if they'd like to change the colour scheme and logo on that
vehicle

/etc/skel can contain files to go in the users home directory, so many

Hi Rob,

Just to emphasise this point, any files you put in /etc/skel will be
copied to the new user's home directory when the account is created.

I work in a IT, so to promote Ubuntu to my workmates I installed Hardy
onto a PC, fired up the 3d desktop, pointed the monitor at the rest of
the office and scrawled 'DIE' in flaming letters.

This attracted a bit of attention from slightly freaked out people
asking how I did it, allowing me to retort 'Tis Ubuntu my friend!'

 How did you do it?

 Sean

Just enable the 3d desktop in the appearance menu, then install
compizconfig-settings-manager from universe.

You can enable/disable all this kind of stuff in there, it'll also
tell you the key combinations to do this kinda stuff for each option.

Great, that gives me something to go on.

Just got to figure out the Samba/NT4 domain authentication now, failing

Ahh cool, I'll have to dig it out (I'm sure I have it somewhere).

I did notice reading through the notes for Intrepid Beta that there is a
new configuration tool for PAM. I'm just giving it a go now by
installing Winbind and then I'll try running pam-auth-update and see
what that does.

[ubuntu-uk] [OT] How free is the Android OS?

2008-10-16 Thread Michael G Fletcher
Hi Guys, slightly off-topic, but I would appreciate your thoughts on this

This was inspired by the news of the G1 phone being released in the UK
on the 30th of October (http://tinyurl.com/48s4gp).

Some questions;

* How free is the OS really?? I know it has a Linux based kernel and
will be open source (?), but with the 100% free OpenMoko, would OM be
better?

* Is it worth tying into a contract with t-mobile (also phone will be
sim-locked), ie - does this go against what freedom is about, or is it
a necessary evil? (like proprietary drivers/firmware)

* Better to wait for the G2, G3 etc etc due to maturity of OS and
better hardware? or cooler to be an early adopter - assumable it will
be 'easily' upgradeable on the OS side.

* And the ultimate question... black or white?

Cheers :-)
