For those who'd like to read it first (second) hand, the follow-up is:

[ubuntu-uk] compiz startup doesn't work

2008-12-15 Thread Farran
Hi all
minor problem, although it could potentially be a bit more serious cos I
couldn't fix it last time I managed to update...

Compiz won't start when I log in, or when I tick the effects box in
appearance prefs. I have to run "killall metacity && compiz --replace"
at least twice before it will work. Then it's fine. But it seems to
think I don't have the right driver installed or something, and i've
tried both drivers, using jockey and envy. Also, when I finally found
the new location of the (login) startup file, it's got compiz listed in
there, with all the id info and order right (with no trace of metacity).
Where is it/me going wrong?

Cheers

The follow up blog post adds a lot of information, it isn't quite as the
register makes it out to be, unsurprisingly.

[ubuntu-uk] Teacher claims Linux 'holding back the kids'

2008-12-15 Thread Michael Rimicans
Sorry that its not about Ubuntu but.

"A US student has landed in hot water with an irate - and apparently
ill-informed - teacher for handing out discs of Linux.

The teacher swiped the discs and promised to prosecute Linux evangelist
Helios for alleged - but unspecified - "illegal" activities, saying
HeliOs is "misleading" students about Linux and holding them back.

The teacher - called Karen and whose second name has been withheld -
said students needed to learn Windows,
not Linux."

fully up to speed as to what to expect on the list.

Enjoy, have fun and don't forget to occasionally contribute!

Hello all,

Thought I should introduce myself since I'm new to the list.

I'm a Developer working for Canonical. I'm part of the Launchpad Bug
Tracker development team; at the moment my primary focus is
integrating with upstream bug trackers.

I'm also a photographer and occasionally make things up for fun. You
can find me at http://grahambinns.com

As for why I'm here... Well, I spent the last week at UDS with Popey,
Daviey and Schwuk, amongst others, and I figured that I really should
be more involved in the community, even if my local LUG has all of
three people in it (The member of SchwukLUG pointed out that he won
the "tiniest LUG" award).

So here I am.

Hi Graham - Nice to meet you :-)

I'm Chris. www.justuber.com/blog - I also try and do photography now and
again but mostly just snap pictures like an tourist without really thinking!
Every so often I'll make an attempt at being artistic but mostly fail!

  Chris
