Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu broken, low graphics mode, no sound

2009-04-01 Thread David King
Thanks, James.

I got some of the programs reinstalled, and my sound was okay after all.
And thankfully my screen res/nvidia drivers all seem to be behaving
themselves tonight.

I just hope that newbies to Linux do not experience this kind of problem
as it can be very offputting. Of course I experienced a lot of bad
things with Windows in the past, which is what drove me to Linux in the
first place.

I just hope that Ubuntu will behave itself now.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Deleted files showing in some dialogue boxes

2009-04-01 Thread Simon Wears
Dianne,

Those are backup files. To get to them in Nautilus, browse to the folder
they're in (for example /home/Dianne/Documents/ ) and press Ctrl + H. This
shows hidden files and folders. From there, you can just delete the
files, then press ctrl + H again to hide hidden files and folders. If you
don't hide them again, you'll find a lot of extra (configuration) folders in
your Home directory.

Hope that helps!

[ubuntu-uk] Deleted files showing in some dialogue boxes

2009-04-01 Thread Dianne Reuby
I'm finding more and more files that have duplicates - presumably backup
files, as they have a tilde in the file name. For example, index.html
and index.htm~

They don't show in Nautilus, but they do show in dialogue boxes such as
"open file", and in programs such as Filezilla.

I'm running 8.10, I've been looking at both OS and program preferences,
but I can't solve this. It only seems to have started recently, but it
is a pain especially if I want to select a block of files.

Any advice welcome - thanks!

Dianne

If you patched 8.04 then try this for the sound:
(I got the same on my Tosh Netbook which also runs 8.04...)

Anyone who has lost the sound on their note book can recover the missing
drivers by entering the following details.

Case Sensitive.

Enter Terminal

type sudo mv /lib/modules/2.6.24-19-lpia/updates/sound ~/sound

press enter

enter password

press enter

type sudo depmod -a

press enter shut down note pad and restart

sound will now be back with you

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Firefox, Swiftfox and Swiftweasel

2009-04-01 Thread Robert Flatters
I have started to notice that the windows Firefox version 3.0.7 crashes
every now and then. The same can be said for the apple version as well, On
Ubuntu 8.10 i don't get that and i notice last night that it loaded pictures
faster than both the apple and windows cussons.
