I just tried it from my work machine and it worked fine. Tracepath
suggests there is a problem between my ISP and the feedburned network.

Thanks for your help.

You can also install the dontzap package to do that manual config for you.

It was disabled because some it was figured that it's a bad idea
having a key combo which basically crashed all your apps.

No problem.

I think it was removed as some people were hitting it in error.

There was a sizable thread in the Jaunty development section on the forums.

I have it re-enabled though. It is handy for getting out of a pickle from
time to time.

Try adding this to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf :

Section "ServerFlags"
Option"DontZap""off"

That should do the trick.

Up until 8.10 I was able to press ctrl+alt+backspace to restart the X

in 9.04 this is no longer a default? Anybody else notice this? Anyway
to manually reset this?

Good luck. It's annoying when it happens. I've had it happen a couple
of times to me, usually because of disc failure. Now I'm in the habit
of replacing hard drives every year or so (I tend to fill drives on my
server often, in fact today I've upgraded one disc from 320GB to 640GB
because it was running low on space). Roll on Blu-ray writers coming
down to about £50 :-)

Hello everyone, thanks for your replies, it turns out that in the end
the system had just munched itself as Tony said. I decided since Its
so badly out of date, and as its just a file server, I'm going to move
all the stuff onto one of my TB drives, install the new version of
Ubuntu and put it all back. Thanks for your advice everyone. :)

Hello, Kris.

This is normal behaviour if your /etc/fstab has an entry like this:

> UUID=... / ext3relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1

The mount option "errors=remount-ro" tells the kernel to remount the '/'
filesystem read-only if any errors occur. This is to prevent a chain
reaction of corruption in which you might lose the entire filesystem!

Best advice is to reboot from the Ubuntu 'live' CD, and salvage anything
precious from the '/' filesystem on the hard disk while you can. Then,
after that, run filesystem diagnostics from the 'live' CD, using e.g.:

   sudo -i
fsck /dev/sda1 # or whatever partition your '/' filesystem is on.

It might also be a good idea to try:

   badblocks -sp1 /dev/sda

Good luck!

   Tony.

I'd also suggest running a file system check on there just to make sure
everything is okay. If you have anything important on there it might
also be a good idea to back it up to a USB stick or external hard drive
just in case.

I've used Brasero for CD burning until Jaunty - I can't update Brasero

Is it something a newbie like me could do without wrecking my system

Many thanks! That is absolutely brilliant and now X.11 is fast and
fluid again on my machine. Wonderful tip - I am extremely grateful.

I did try, experimentally, switching back to Compiz with DRI off, but
it all went horribly wrong. Nothing appeared on a blank white screen
except corrupted icons for the alt-tab task switcher, and it seems the
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace shortcut to kill X no longer works.

10min of fiddling & a few reboots later, I'd reverted back to non-DRI
Metacity & all is normal again. I still have the keyboard issues to
resolve but I now think that is something else. I've also uninstalled
Compiz to make sure it doesn't accidentally get re-enabled.

I've been running it for 10 days or so. The RC was widely available on
Bittorrent as soon as it was announced - I got it overnight. And yes,
the product keys from the MS beta work fine.

It's actually OK, although it it irks me to say it. Dog-slow compared

The page you mention is flash based, and that should work, indeed it
does work here, with the flash plugin installed. You wont need any
additional codecs, just the flash plugin.

[ubuntu-uk] multimedia notes

2009-05-05 Thread alan c
I put together the following information for those who may not care
about restrictions, and just need some help with multimedia.
It draws heavily on the medibuntu repositories, and is written with
novices in mind:

==
Multimedia and Ubuntu

How to get multimedia codecs the easy way!

Disclaimer: Patent and copyright laws operate differently depending
on which country you are in. Please obtain legal advice if you are
unsure whether a particular patent or restriction applies to a media
format you wish to use in your country.

For legal reasons Ubuntu (as first installed) lacks many of the codecs
which are needed to play some of the many possible audio or video
formats available. This is because of global, geographical, variations
in legislation regarding intellectual property, security and other issues.

Before following any of the procedures offered in here, please note
that immediately after installation it is recommended to first
download any security updates which are available to date. If you do
not see a pop up offer for this then use
System>Administration>UpdateManager
and accept the updates (this is not the same as an upgrade to a later
version of Ubuntu, which you should avoid doing unless you
deliberately want that).

1) Multimedia – Linux native codecs
To get pretty well all of the multimedia codecs the easy way, ensure
the machine is connected to the internet and use the facility
Add/Remove applications
If the list is out of date, accept a refresh, and more recent
information will be downloaded. Then use
Applications>Add/Remove

Ensure that 'All' is selected, and Click the choices to select 'All
Available Applications' from the list.

Then into the 'Search' space type
gstreamer

After a short time, the search results will display a number of
gstreamer entries and in addition the item 'Ubuntu restricted extras'.

For each of these in turn, including the 'Ubuntu restricted extras',
click the check box so that a tick is shown. As you do this you will
also be asked to confirm what you want and that you do not live in a
country where such codecs are not allowed (such as USA).

Note that in some versions of Ubuntu, for example, 9.04, the
[gstreamer fluendo MPEG2 demuxing plugin] is not required and will
conflict with other installed software. If so, you will see an error
warning message, so in this case, there is no need for this item.

When your choices are all checked and accepted, click the 'Apply'
button and they will be downloaded and installed. You will now have
installed most of the multimedia codecs.

2) Further actions:
Playing Encrypted DVDs
The several actions above will be capable of installing most
multimedia codecs. However, to play encrypted DVDs (some commercial
DVDs), the libdvdcss2 package is also an essential requirement.
libdvdcss2 is a simple library designed for accessing DVDs like a
block device without having to use decryption. This can be installed
easily after the medibuntu repository has been enabled for your
machine, please see below.

3) Playing some non-native formats
Some media formats do not have native Linux facilities. In such cases
it is possible to make use of binary Windows and other codecs through
a 'wrapper', bundled as the 'w32codecs', for playback of these media
formats. This can be installed easily after the medibuntu repository
has been enabled for your machine, please see below.
There are various ways of installing these additional packages,
although the exact details depend upon which type of computer you have
and which version of Ubuntu you use (Note 1).

4) The medibuntu repository
If your computer is configured to make use of the special software
repository for Multimedia, Entertainment & Distractions In Ubuntu
(medibuntu), then subsequent actions, including security updates, can
be handled conveniently. Unfortunately for the beginner, the
configuration to include a new software repository can seem a bit
demanding at first.
The following actions are closely based on information at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

An overview of actions is:
- Get the sources list and keyring
- Then get specific information for your Ubuntu version
- Then, add the GPG Key (to help ensure you only use the repository
you are expecting).

The detailed actions for these three stages are best followed by using
the medibuntu link
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
(please note the leading upper case in the word Medibuntu here)
On that page please see:
'Adding the Repositories'
This technique makes use of a Terminal, and copy and paste.
If it seems complicated at first, have a look again at the overview of
actions listed above, to help see what is being done.

How to get a 'Terminal'?
Applications>Accessories>Terminal
It is a powerful way of doing things fast. It is certainly much more
powerful than it first appears, so do not rush with any typing or
commands. Take your time.

For example, the first action i

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Problems with watching training videos on Ubuntu

2009-05-05 Thread John
Hi everybody, I have got medibuntu installed, so I am not sure if that
is the problem. I am pretty certain they are installed properly, I
followed the instructions. I have the Macromedia Flash Player installed.
I have looked in my plugins for FF, and the mplayer plugin is not there.
How do I get that plugin? I looked in the Firefox Plugins but its not
there, is it in the Repositories? I also have the
*ubuntu-restricted-extras *installed as well, in the add/remove programs.

Hi John,

If you go into Applications -> Add/Remove, then change the drop down box
from Canonical-Maintained Applications to All Applications and search
for flash. It should come up with Macromedia Flash Player, which you
want to install. Also make sure Gnash and swfdec are unticked. Then
apply changes. You may need to restart firefox to get it to recognise
the changes.

If it's fully embedded video, not just flash, then I'd recommend the
mplayer plugin for mozilla. Works a treat for me, but may not be anyones
cup of tea.

Not that I've heard of. I've only really played a computer opponent,
but have you looked at KGS? A lot of the people in Cardiff Go Club
play on that server, but it only offers real-time games rather than a
move at a time.

Last time I looked at cgoban, it was really ugly. I have used a Java
program to draw the board - jago. It will allow you to play against
gnugo (even under Cygwin on Windows), but I haven't done this much. I
normally use igowin running under Wine.

Hmm, that's an awful lot of program names with no URLs in that
paragraph. Let me know if anyone wants more details about any of them.

Cofion/Regards,
Neil.
