Have a look at

http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-iP4600

to see if it rings any bells. It seems to suggest that there isn't 100%
support for this printer.

If it works OK with W7 then it’s more likely the Linux driver, which in my
experience are of veriable quality.
Have you tried TurboPrint http://www.turboprint.info/ it cost money but
there is a 30 day trial. Not tried it, yet, myself

[ubuntu-uk] still having problems with Canon printer.

2010-01-07 Thread Jon Taylor
Hi,

Recently I installed a canon ip4600 on my mum's Ubuntu Karmic pc, it's a
fairly new machine (having been bought 2-3 months ago from Scan) and it
get's updated regularly. We still get problems with the printer though, some
days it works, and other days it says there's no paper in it (even if it's
got half a ream in it.)

It works fine under windows (7 RC) but on 2 separate Ubuntu pc's (my mums
and my nephews) it fails to print anything but the test page (and then only
after I delete and reinstall the printer on the machine.)

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion this printer is a Friday afternoon
built unit, and it needs to go back unless anyone has any suggestions or
thoughts that might shed some light on this.

As I said it seems to work fine on my office pc running windows 7rc, so I'm
a puzzled plumber.

I'd be really grateful if anyone has a solution or words of wisdom regarding
it.

Cheers all, hope you all had a good Christmas and new year.

Jon

According to the Talktalk web site, the POP server is mail.talktalk.net
and the smtp server is smtp.talktalk.net

This guide for Outlook Express should point you in the right direction
(at least for the mail server addresses)...

http://broadband.talktalk.co.uk/help/questions/TEC_01_14

Or have a look at the Webmail that Talktalk have on their web site. You
may find you can use this to read your mail (this is what my Dad did
after he had problems with Talktalk e-mail).

[ubuntu-uk] Make USB serial ports stick...

2010-01-07 Thread LeeGroups
My google-fu is weak today...

My server is having issues, it's been rebooted after some software
issues (my bad), the problem now is that it has a load of USB-to-serial
adapters which have all changed their names (/dev/ttyUSBx). This is a
problem as there are four of them and they all have different bits of
kit hanging off them, and the software that uses them is getting very
confused.

So my question is, how can I make each USB-to-serial adapter 'stick' to
its /dev/ttyUSBx id?

Cheers,

You can always telnet to the relevant ports and test if the servers are
running.

Google for something like command line access {pop,smtp}

A second hard disk?

If you already have a disk and you're adding a second one then it can
be accessed from Ubuntu. If it's already formatted then you can mount
it, if it's not formatted, or you want to wipe/format it, then you can
do that too. See these links:-

Yes, though you may want to format/partition to suit. By default it
should be mounted under /media and show up automatically on the
desktop.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Add a hard drive

2010-01-07 Thread Kenny Coyle
It will be detected, you will simply need to map it to a location using
fstab (or mount it to a location manually using mount).

You will likely also have to partition the drive, you can use a command line
tool like cfdisk or a gui based tool like gparted to do this for you...

I'm currently using talktalk too - although I havent dare ring up the support

I've only just joined this group, so I'm not sure what problem you're having -
is it something to do with email? I've got a laptop with 8.04 that uses
TalkTalk POP email - I'll see if I can help you!

Petra,

If you could possibly send me a few to distribute to other Ubuntu people where
I live, that'd be great.
Any number and type of shirts would be good, although it looks like I would

It'd be postage within the UK, so I wouldn't mind paying something towards
shipping.
Thanks.
