[ubuntu-uk] Fwd: [Symphonic-testers] JSymphonic v0.3.0 Ode To Freedom and v0.4.0 pre-alpha1

2010-04-30 Thread Markie
Hi Folks,

I may have mentioned this app before, I cant remember, but anyway the mail
below is news of a new release. If anyone is interested in trying it out and
providing some feedback...

JSymphonic allows you to manage music on your Sony Walkman device without
the need for the usual sonic stage app with is like sony's equivalent for
itunes. Also (and this is the best bit) its only a small app so you can load
it onto the stick and run it from and platform thats got a JRE installed.
Breathed a new life into my walkman when I switched to Ubuntu.

Cheers

Mark

Subject: [Symphonic-testers] JSymphonic v0.3.0 Ode To Freedom and v0.4.0
pre-alpha1
To:

Hi everyone !

### v0.3.0
First stable version of JSymphonic, named Ode To Freedom, v0.3.0 has been
released on February. If you haven't done so yet, download and test this
version. Please remember that it is declared to be a stable version, so it
is important to report any bug you may encounter!!

Some languages are missing for this version. If the translators take the
time to complete the translations, new version will be released to include
them.

### v0.4.0
Next version is still under development. But a pre-alpha has been released
last week.
Done:
- GUI has been reviewed and one important new feature appearing is the
drag'n'drop.
- playlist importation is now implemented

To do:
- fully implement the playlist feature (it is not possible for the moment to
create a playlist from the content of the player,...)

Please test the new pre-alpha, to be downloaded here:
http://symphonic.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/symphonic/jsymphonic/trunk/

All report for this version should be made directly to me by email or in the
developer part of the forum, but since this release is not official, please
do not post in the public forum.

Enjoy these versions :-)

Greets,
Nicolas

I think you'll find that it was likely more due to identification improvements.
I have a ZTE MF627 that worked fine once you had unmounted the USB storage
drive incarnation of it. With a minor patch to the usb_modeswitch package
(configuration wise so it could be identified) it was automatically recognised
as a modem. Having upgraded to Lucid I purged the patch package and it is still
automatically identified as a modem without problems :)

That's good. I remember having a few issues with um... Ubuntu 8.10 I
think with USB mobile broadband modems, but as you say now it just works
(in fact it's a lot quicker than Windows as I don't have to install the
Windows software to use it).

[ubuntu-uk] Evolution crashes when accessing Exchange 2003 server

2010-04-30 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

I've just started a new job and at the moment I've been using my own
personal laptop which is running Ubuntu 10.04 (actually I'm the only IT
guy where I work so when I get another machine it may end up running
Ubuntu rather than Windows).

Anyway, I've been trying to get Evolution working with the company's
Exchange server (running Exchange 2003). I did manage to get it working
okay with Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 (i386) and it was fairly stable but having
installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (AMD64) on my laptop (on a
brand new hard drive) I'm finding that Evolution crashes when connecting
to the Exchange server.

The initial setup appears to work okay but when it comes to doing a
Send/Receive it crashes Evolution with a segmentation fault.

I've done a bit of searching and it appears this problem occurred with
older versions of Evolution, but I haven't found anything related to
Evolution on Lucid.

I have reported it as a bug but I wondered if anyone else had seen this?

Ta,

Rob

[ubuntu-uk] Mobile Broadband dongle ...

2010-04-30 Thread NTLWorld
Hi there

Just had a pleasant surprise! I collected my mobile broadband dongle
back from a friend who had borrowed it, and plugged it into my netbook.
It worked straight away. I hadn't expected that, as it is supposed to
present to the USB as a storage device, and from there, install Windows
drivers. I imagine some improvements in Lucid do something to tell the
modem automatically that it needs to be a modem.

For interest, the modem is a ZTE MF622. I'm delighted!

Hi Markie,

yes, there is some code that was introduced into the forthcoming 3.1
release that adds support for the various notification mechanisms: Growl
(MacOS) and Libnotify (Linux) and whatever the windows equivalent is.

However, a recent comment on bugzilla indicates that it might have been
pulled due to a blocking bug for the time being:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=478463

There is however a Thunderbird extension that adds the Indicator Applet
and libnotify support which you could use for the time-being:
http://www.theopensourcerer.com/2010/02/09/indicator-applet-libnotify-support-for-thunderbird/

[ubuntu-uk] Including thundebird into the gnome desktop notification

2010-04-30 Thread Markie
Hi Folks,

I installed Lucid onto a spare old external HDD last night and its doing
great so far. I wondered if Thunderbird might have been included into the
desktop notification but alas it hasnt. Its no big deal but the way pidgin
has been integrated it would be nice to see TB. Especially seeing as
Thunderbird 3 seems to come with the default install now which is a marked
improvement on its predecessor.

Does anyone know if theres plans or a way to include it into the
notification area?

Thanks

OK, if you know it worked with Karmic, can you boot Karmic using a live
USB? If that works, you should be able to mount the Lucid partition and
get the logs.

The label in Grub is cosmetic, the (partly upgraded) system will be booted
anyway. You should be able to:

  sudo update-grub

to push that change. Please could you file a bug report that Wine is
preventing the upgrade from finishing:

[ubuntu-uk] Final Upgrade to Lucid, not worked completely

2010-04-30 Thread John Matthews
I did my final upgrade, via System>Administration>Update Manager...but
unfortunately, towards the end of the update, Wine couldnt be installed,
and it halted the installation. Now in the grub, I have old versions of
Ubuntu showing, and about 10 of them, and I know it should show the
updated version, which it does when I call the versions installed using
the terminal. For some reason I cant get it to change, no matter what I
have done to try.

Does anybody know ho I can update it, so that it only shows Lucid int he
grub?

Thanks

John

Did you try to boot after removing 'quiet splash' to see if you had any
meaningful error message? Here are the details of how to do that:

When you boot the machine, press SHIFT to get the GRUB menu, then press
'e' to edit the first line, remove 'quiet splash' at the end of the
penultimate line and press CTRL-x to boot[1]. It should now boot without
the logo and should also display a lot of things on the console.
Hopefully the last thing it displays will be a meaningful error message.

One thing i do get is an error saying "fail: unreadahead-other main
process (644)" i think, it flashes very quickly before the gui starts
and it crashes.

Hello, I don't have a bootable CDROM, but I have tried a live USB
boot, and It doesn't work, literally exactly the same problem of the
repeating bootup music.

Another thing you can do if you have another computer lying around is
enable netconsole[2] so that it sends the full boot log to the other
computer.

Hello all,
I hope last nights release party at Davy's was a successful and fun event
for all.

the most out of the distribution and as most are new to Ubuntu anyone is
welcome as all the basics will be covered.

Good luck to everyone at all the other release
parties,
I hope they are all very successful.

Hello. Thanks for your post. I can't access anything on the system, only
holding the power button can turn it off. I just know the card works on
9.10.

Can you hit the ALT+CTRL+F1 key to get a terminal? You can then access
/var/log to take a look in the logs. The Xorg logs may have something,
personally I dont understand those logs much myself, but someone on here or
the ubuntuforums will be able to help.

Also running "sudo lshw" will give useful output on hardware if you get to
the command line.

Try searching the ubuntu forums for this card if you think its the graphics.
Can you try booting and running from a Live CD? How does that work?
