Re: [ubuntu-uk] Updating Website on server.......
We have no background information to determine what exactly is the issue... this is, it appears, a piece of forum software which uses MySQL/PHP but doesn't appear to have an automated browser-driven upgrade routine... I would, personally, avoid any piece of software that starts off its upgrade instructions with "replace these files"... it is a minefield, and you only have to make one mistake and the whole thing is knackered. Why, exactly, did you choose this piece of software that seems to have some way to go before one could say it was "user-friendly" at all? I know phpBB etc. are not perfect, but at least they do endeavour to help the user keep up-to-date. And in that regard, is there any pressing reason you NEED to upgrade? If not, why not just install from scratch and stick with the current version? Sean -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

You still have not given us any information about which version you are trying to upgrade from/to, and what happened when you followed the instructions at http://vanillaforums.org/page/UpgradeInstructions or which bit of that you do not understand. No-one can help unless you describe what you are trying to do in detail, what you have tried, and what happened. I read the instructions, but it doesnt talk about using the Terminal to upgrade, and how to do it. It also doesnt talk about using the terminal to upgrade and take backups. I actually managed to get the Upgrade uploaded to the server, then tried to get the database fixed, but it kept giving errors. I didnt even bother to ask about the backup, left that. I posted to the help forum, and nobody, even knew what the error meant, so I left it. Now I find its moved on another 3 upgrades since I tried, so I just wondered if somebody could talk me through it. If somebody can, I will give more info, to that person, as I dont want it over the list. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Empathy Blocking Contacts
I know, I used to like pidgin but empathy kept crashing my desktop for a while. They've fixed that, but it still has a way to go, I think. It's a pity Wengo never got anywhere (Qutephone seems to be Win/Mac only) - that was buggy but it could integrate VoIP social networking with all the major chat protocols, loved it but couldn't get anyone else to use it and now it's gone :( Paula On 06/09/10 14:53, Liam Proven wrote: On 6 September 2010 14:49, pmgazz wrote: Well, it's kinda unbelievable, but apparently you can't: http://tinyurl.com/33txoor Paula Amazing. I didn't know that. For what it's worth, after a very short eval period, I uninstalled Empathy and reloaded Pidgin, which I'm quite happy with. I use it on Windows as well; it's pleasant to have the same basic set of apps on both platforms. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Samba Shares
I couldn't get the tool to work either, I haven't experimented with Meercat yet, I installed 4 on a Lucid installation - finally, I copied over my old manually-typed smb.conf and it sorta worked OK ;) Gotta say, my brush with it inspired me with trepidation but I'm sure it'll get sorted out anon. I found FreeNAS annoying - I don't know FreeBSD and so I could get an Ubuntu file server set up in a fraction of the time - and it's relatively hellish getting it running properly on motley hardware too.
