There might be something in dmesg, but I'm inclined to agree that it's probably a cooling issue, in which case blowing dust out is the best plan. Might also be worth checking the BIOS after the machine shuts down, that might give you some temperatures, and some BIOSes have warning alarms when a certain temperature is reached which might help? I'd also suggest maybe running a memtest. You can find memtest on the Ubuntu CD, boot from the CD and select the option Test memory (or something like that). Of course this might not explain why it's suddenly turning off but you can diagnose if there are any memory errors (if it's dusty inside and overheating then long term it could cause components to fail). If you clean the insides of your PC out I'd suggest getting a can of compressed air (and maybe take it outside to blow out), it could also be worth replacing the heatsink compound on the heatsink/CPU if you're confident enough taking your PC apart that much. I find nail varnish remover works great for removing heatsink compound and maybe use a bit of Brasso to clean off the heatsink, or get some heatsink cleaning fluid (you should be able to get some online or from your local PC World). Re: [ubuntu-uk] Running From Pendrive with Persistence Allocated
On 2 October 2010 13:53, Tony Doherty tony.dohe...@zen.co.uk wrote: I have been experimenting over the past few months with Ubuntu 9.10 10.4 running entirely from a 4Gb USB memory stick and with 1Gb of persistence (Casper) allocated. I use the Pendrive Linux utility to prepare the memory stick. I tend to find that, after a few updates have been received, Ubuntu refuses to boot from the drive due to various errors. Selecting an older Generic Header can restore the boot therefore it appears to be corruption of the latest updated Header. Surely it's just running out of space? The way I understand it you're using the live image on a USB key, which cannot be changed, so any new/updated packages and data are going to eat into the 1GB of persistent storage? If you do a 'proper' install to the USB key - that is, boot from a CD or USB key and run Ubiquity (the installer) to install _onto_ another USB key, then use that, you'll not see these issues. Re: [ubuntu-uk] usb devices and ubuntu 10.04
sounds like a power problem to me, is it a powered usb hub (with a plug/adapter/transformer) On 29 September 2010 20:54, Glen Mehn glen.m...@oba.co.uk wrote: Hi Paul, I've had no problems with this from, broadly, 7.x to 10.04/10.10. /media should be dynamically creating folder names to mount things. From what I can tell, you have several problems of problems: 1 - the Sansa MP3 player sometimes mounts and sometimes randomly unmounts 2 - the USB hard drive mounts when plugged in directly, but not via the hub 3 - you can only access one USB drive through the hub Is that correct? The behaviour you're describing sounds rather a lot like something I have experienced: a dodgy USB cable and/or connection-- you might check the cable, the socket on the hub, and the socket on the mp3 player. Once you've cleared cables, try this: What is the output of lsusb with: - evertything unplugged - the hub only plugged in (no devices attached to it) - the hub plugged in with 1, then 2 devices attached to it. That'll let you know waht the USB bus is seeing. You might also google the model number of your hub and linux or ubuntu to see if other folks are experiencing the same issue. I would suspect that the system isn't seeing the hub as a hub, so only able to attach one device on to it. Hope this helps. I am really really struggling to explain exactly what the situation is as to me it seems random, sometimes I can plug the music device in and it works. It just seems to randomly work, i am worried as to why something would just unmount for no aparent reason (or appear to) i did manage to get both working, and tried to copied 2 folders of music across to the player only half way through the copy dialog seemed to be stalled, so after a while i ended it, and tried to unmount, i then got another dialog saying it was writing remaining data, which again didn't seem to be doing much, just displaying a status box with another bar moving back and forth quickly. has anyone else had any issues trying to plug in two usb storage devices. [ubuntu-uk] unable to install 10.04.1
I have just finished trying to install 10.04.1 onto an old desktop computer belonging to a friend of mine and failed to do so. The installation started OK and then the red and white dots froze and the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights on the keyboard kept flashing on and off. I am confident that the CD is OK because it has worked on another of my machines. Not wanting to let my friend go away Ubuntu less I installed 9.10 with no problems. I wonder why 10.04.1 would not install? Norman -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Norman 10.04 does appear to have significant stability issues on some machines, please see this (very long) thread on the forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1478787page=110 The freezes can happen during installation or at any time during normal operation. Some users have found turning off the ACPI power management function, either in the BIOS or using boot options, helps, but this action may give you other problems such as the shut down command not working properly. The instability problems go away if you revert to an earlier version of the kernel, i.e. pre 2.6.32, as you have already found by using 9.10.
