[ubuntu-uk] Insurance.aes256 and OpenSSL

2011-01-03 Thread Rowan Berkeley
Hi. AEScrypt say they have looked at WikiLeaks' mysterious 1.4GB
'Insurance.aes256' file, and it appears to have been encrypted using
OpenSSL:
http://forums.packetizer.com/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=108
I have the file itself, and the default OpenSSL packages for 10.04, but
OpenSSL is a command line application and I wonder if anyone could tell
me what to type into the terminal in order to at least inspect the file
and gain some information about it.

There are two threads. The first is a bunch of "me too" threads asking
for invites, the second is a bunch of "Here's what I call myself on
Diaspora" which would be of use for finding each other assuming
Diaspora doesn't have the search function to (or can't link inviters
with invitees).

I was only really puzzled by the first; the fact that so many people
apparently didn't think to reply off-list, especially given the
presence of a thread consisting entirely of people saying what they'd
called themselves.

Anyway, this is rapidly becoming much ado about nothing. There are
plenty of other threads I manage to silently ignore.

2011-01-03 Thread James Tait
I wasn't going to comment, but I think some people have missed the point.

These are not "me too" replies intended for a single recipient. Diaspora is a
social network and as such it depends upon people "connecting" in order to
work. There are clearly a number of people on this list who are interested in
connecting with as many of the other list subscribers as possible. The best way
of reaching those subscribers and letting them know your details is via the
list, since many of us don't have each other's e-mail addresses.

It is also in keeping with the purpose of the list - we would like to establish
an Ubuntu UK presence on Diaspora, even if only out of curiosity. This is a
technical project aimed at like-minded people in a predominantly technical
audience. We discuss lots of other kinds of projects on this list and nobody
complains. Why should this project be any different?

I was wondering that myself! I added myself to the waiting list a while back
though, so I'll probably get one eventually. I looked at the requirements for
running a server, but decided I didn't really want to start messing with Ruby
as there's nothing else on my server that uses it. If it had been Perl (or
PHP?!) I might have taken a closer look.

Doesn't this make having sent all those "me too" replies to the list
even more pointless? I can't quite imagine the sort of process that
results in sending mail to a mailing list fully expecting the
recipients of the list to have made a rule that deletes that mail on
delivery.

Surely it's just general common-sense that mail sent to a mailing list
be intended to be of interest to at least some proportion of the list?
If there's only one intended recipient, it'd strike me as quite logical
to only bother that single recipient with it.

You're a happy bunny this morning. If you have a problem with that email
