I think it messed up a little, then I messed it up a lot by trying to install efi grub on a machine that didn't need it. Generally the live USB booted fine though, it was just the install that I got wrong. If you downloaded an iso image then which one? Have you successfully burned other images to usb and booted from them? Did you check the md5sum of the image downloaded? Have you tried re-burning (preferably to a different stick).
