[ubuntu-uk] Does AV chat work with Jabber?

2012-03-22 Thread Tony Pursell
Hi Folks

Does anyone know if Audio and Video (AV) chat works with Jabber from
Empathy?

I meet up with my brother frequently on-line for an AV chat. Up to now we
have used Skype, which works well, because he is basically a Windows man,
but recently he has started to experiment with Ubuntu (11.10) on a USB
stick. We have tried our usual Skype chat using Ubuntu both ends and that
is OK (now he has got himself a UVC compatible webcam). However, when we
tried Jabber AV chat we got no connection. I would like to show him that
we can move away from Skype, especially as we can expect no more Linux
support for it now that Microsoft have bought them.

I have just been trying to make a Jabber AV connection between two
computers at home using Empathy and that has been a failure too, although I
have had it working OK in the past. Both ends just showed 'Connecting' and
even when I hung up both ends, my desktop computer showed Pulseaudio and
zeitgeist-daemon taking up to 100% of both CPU cores and 80% of the 2GB
ram, until I killed them both.

What experience do other people have?

I know AV chat may not be a top priority for a lot of the Ubuntu community,
but Microsoft always make a big thing of it when promoting their operating
systems.

Hi, sorry I took so long to get back to you, have a few health problems that
have been causing some problems.

I tried typing brasero into a terminal and got this message

brasero: error while loading shared libraries: libunity.so.6: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

Something is missing apparently. If you have not already done so then
check all is up to date
sudo apt-get update&&  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and if still no joy then reinstall brasero might help
sudo apt-get --reinstall install brasero

Googling for brasero libunity suggests you are not alone in this. See
[1] and [2] and possibly others.

Suggestions there are to do (after my previous suggestions I think)
sudo ln /usr/lib/libunity.so.9 /usr/lib/libunity.so.6
or/and
sudo apt-get --reinstall libunity6
but I cannot vouch for these.

Is anyone more knowledgeable reading?

Ah, that worked, I entered the first two commands then this one

sudo ln /usr/lib/libunity.so.9 /usr/lib/libunity.so.6

It now works..Brasero opened.have to see if I can burn an image if that
works I'll let you know, thank you so much.

I reported it as an ubuntu-desktop rather than a nautilus bug as the
situation arose with launchers that were already on my desktop and
looked OK one day and not the next. Nautilus displays the problem when
pointed at /usr/share/applications but I don't think the bug is actually
in Nautilus, so it's my guess that the Nautilus report is a duplicate of
the one I reported and not vice versa - and I could be wrong! At least

Re: [ubuntu-uk] [UKUUG-Announce] OSSG HMG Desktop Event

2012-03-22 Thread Alan Bell
really interesting sounding event at the BCS in London coming up for
those interested in public sector use of Free Software. Steve Lamb from

Software Foundation, Canonical and Red Hat

On 22/03/12 10:36, Jane Morrison wrote:

Looking into the Future of HMG Desktop/Client side computing –

The BCS Open Source Specialist Group (OSSG) will be holding a detailed event
around the future of HM Government Desktop/Client side computing at the BCS
Central London Offices, First Floor, The Davidson Building, 5 Southampton
Street, London WC2E 7HA (http://www.bcs.org/upload/pdf/london-office-guide.pdf)
on Wednesday 4th April 2012, from 1000 to 1700 hours.

Rationale for this event

With HM Government looking with renewed vigour at its computer
systems and in particular what benefits open source may bring, this
event intends to take a detailed look at what HMG Desktop/Client side
computing may consist of in the near future. For example should it be
based primarily around web services where accessible would not be
platform dependent so that for instance Civil Servants can load whatever
operating system they like on to an HMG funded laptop. Alternatively
could the future follow more closely the success
(http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/limux-munich-linux-migration-project-
reports-success) of the City of Munich using the Limux operating system based
around Ubuntu Linux 10.10 or perhaps should some form of rigidly controlled
thin client system running off of blade servers be used.

Another possible way forward is through the use of what has been
termed the ‘Jigsaw approach’ where business applications are all fully
vendor independent of each other and can be swapped from one product to
another with relative ease. For instance one Office Suite or Browser
product might be used for say 6 months and therefore form part of the
HMG desktop for that period of time, but can easily be changed for
another product after that period of time.

This bookable event is free and open to all with buffet and refreshments. To

I don't understand where you are seeing this. Is it desktop files
inside nautilus, shortcuts on the desktop, something to do with the
launcher, or where?

A full screenshot posted somewhere as suggested by Bod might be helpful

Hi there This morning I am faced with the desktop icons showing

This was after yesterday's updates to Precise.

I did try re-installing Ubuntu desktop using: sudo apt-get install
ubuntu-desktop^ as suggested by Popey in connection with another query.
This did not alter the situation. All the icons in the
/usr/share/applications directory show the same problem - the
description and the comment show all the time for every icon. I have
done a small screenshot of a couple of these icons. I hope that will
'travel'. Any ideas? Or is it time to re-install Precise?

Regards,Barry.
