[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu on PC Specialist Laptops

2012-07-04 Thread Colin Law
Has anyone any experience of running Ubuntu on laptops from PC
Specialist [1]? I am particularly interested in the Genesys IV [2].
They will supply without Windows with a reduction of £80.

I believe they are based on Clevo laptops.

Colin

I have a Lenovo laptop running only Ubuntu, no windows, and that its from
Linux Emporium. I have not had any problems with it and the after sales
service is exceptional.

I have the System 76 Lemur which is the PCSpecialist Xenon. It works out of
the box with Ubuntu but System76 provide an open source driver that allows
the control buttons to function correctly.

12.04 has better power management than the originally installed 11.10 did.
The build is a bit plasticy but as a relatively cheap utility laptop that
you can design yourself, they're worth a look.

Hello Colin,

I have has numerous machines from them, they are pretty spot on. With
a dedicated graphics card, sometimes it's difficult to swap between
the Intel Integrated and primary card, but it's not caused me any
issues.

Not based on, they _are_ Clevo laptops.

The first thing that leaps off the screen at me is that genesisIV has an
nVidia 'Optimus' video card.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/96552/how-well-will-nvidia-optimus-cards-be-supported-in-12-04

nVidia's official position is that they have no plans to support
Optimus on Linux - our graphics stack is engineered with an assumption
that only one card is driving a given display, and it's not easy to work
around.

Personally I'd avoid it and get something like a Lenovo.

Cheers,

The nVidia card is an option. You can also have the Intel HD 4000, which is
supported, at least by System 76.

2012-07-04 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi guys gals,

with regards to laptops in general, the laptop team have done some sterling
work they have now fully integrated into the tracker system for testing
[1]. If any of you do test any of the *buntu family on a laptop, may I ask
that you do provide a profile and thus let others know how you get along.
This information is invaluable to others who want to decide which laptop is
'plug go' Vs 'a complete nightmare'.

Thanks,

Phill.
