 In
fact, my Thinkpad X220 is still going strong, running Ubuntu. But I
thought it would be good to vote with my wallet to show some support
through Dell. Again, lesson learned -- they don't care.

One question: why isn't this email chain being cc'd to Dell?

I sent all this to Burton George, who's the project lead at Dell for
Sputnik. He seemed interested, but nothing ever happened.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] How old is your computer?

2015-01-06 Thread David Chatterton
Dare I say, Ubuntu / Linux is just small fry for Dell who are intimately tied
up with Microsoft. The fact that they do supply some models with Ubuntu
pre-installed is at least a ray of light in the darkness but to expect some
meaningful support is being over-optimistic. The fact that Dell just
pre-install 12.04 is significant. As soon as Ubuntu runs, it offers an upgrade
to the latest version which is Dell’s let-out. They will probably claim that
they just support 12.04.

Who remembers the video recording wars? Sony Betamax was better than VHS
whereas the Grundig 2000 system put them both in the shade. VHS had the
“software” in terms of pre-recorded tapes. Grundig soon left the game and even
Sony ended up making VHS video machines.

One lesson Dell ought to consider. If Ubuntu does not work well on Dell
laptops, I am not going to buy any more Dell computers just to run Windows. I
shall stick to my Apple Macs. My Dell XPS 13 is a neat little machine with lots
of interesting features. The last thing that I would do to it is to install a
copy of Windows on it.
