Some less ad-plastered links, direct from the horses' mouths:

http://blog.canonical.com/2012/06/22/an-update-on-ubuntu-and-secure-boot/

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2012-June/035445.html

And to hopefully pre-empt some of the FUD from the last time this came
up...

- - on x86, users WILL have a boot option to add trusted keys (e.g.
Canonical's)
- - on x86, users WILL have a boot option to disable safeboot entirely
if they wish
- - on ARM, a locked-down (i.e. Win8 only) implementation will only be
required for products shipping with Win8 pre-loaded - so not Android
tablets, etc.

Personally my only concern is that "[Canonical] will be requiring that
the standard Microsoft key be present in the Ubuntu certification
process". I'd rather be able to replace the pre-loaded MS key with
Ubuntu's own, and install/run an entirely MS-free system if I wished.
But I can understand the desire for it to "just work".

so why not sell them here too ?

From what I recall, they did for a while and it was a monumental
failure. Perhaps it was before its time, perhaps Dell didn't do a good
enough job of marketing it, but either way I think they did it for a
while and then binned the idea.

Personally I'd like to see someone try it again. The big stumbling
block, I think, isn't telling Joe Public that Ubuntu is better than
Windows: They can figure that out for themselves, and if they can't then
maybe for them Ubuntu /isn't/ better.

What Dell, or PC World, or whoever tries this at a national level needs
to educate your average home user about is that Ubuntu is different, and
isn't compatible with Windows, and why. I vaguely recall stories from
the last time someone tried selling pre-loaded Linux laptops to Joe
Public that a number of users were returning them as "faulty" because
their Windows software didn't work.

Good luck to the chap who posted to this list a few days ago trying to
do the same thing - I hope it's a big success.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi John,

Do you have an URL we can visit and check?

As you mentioned localhost, I'm assuming you're trying to view your
website on a web server (Apache, or similar) running on your own PC.
In that case, you'll need to copy all of the files into the
appropriate folder which Apache uses as it's main folder. For Apache
installed through the software centre in Ubuntu, this is /var/www/ but
other implementations may vary.

I'd also check that the names you've used in your HTML code is
correctly pointing to the files you're trying to reference. In
particular, take care of the file extensions - you've mentioned
"index.html" but "gallery.htm" (no 'l').

Good luck,
Chris

I can't comment on the thinkpad in particular, but GRUB on my HP laptop
gives separate boot options for the Vista partition and the HP Restore

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Heads up: Fedora pays Microsoft

2012-06-01 Thread Chris Fox
Unlikely, considering that (as I understand it) the option to disable UEFI
and/or load other keys is listed as a requirement in the specification (for
x86 at least).

For ARM, this functionality won't be included on devices shipping with
win8. So yeah it'll need to be hacked in order to install another OS.
Whether it'd fall under the scope of DRM circumvention would need a lawyer
in your jurisdiction but the intention of UEFI is only to prevent unsigned
code reaching the hardware, not copyright protection.

I think that was one of the reasons for Fedora's deal with Microsoft.
Getting a user to manually change the BIOS to remove this "protection" may
be seen as a type of DRM Circumvention which can be illegal in some
countries.

Or would this not come under those laws?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Heads up: Fedora pays Microsoft

2012-06-01 Thread Chris Fox
It'll affect any motherboard manufacturers who want their boards to
be 'Win8 certified'.

In practice, the current spec requires it to be disableable from the
boot menu. However, Joe Bloggs isn't going to be comfortable messing in
the bios to install a non MS OS, and it's (in some people 's opinion) a
slippery slope to more restricted implementations in the future.

Rohan,

You may want to consider asking a question at

wider group of people, in a setting which is intended for answering
support questions like yours.

Does k3b use CD-Text? I thought that most apps used CDDB, which queries
the track info from the internet rather than storing it on the disc...

Just to throw an alternative out there - For reasons failing
understanding I stupidly studied Law at uni before I realised that I
actually didn't want to be a lawyer and that I should have studied CS
instead.

So, I'm currently doing BSc (Hons) Computing[1] with the Open
University. The course mostly teaches OOP and Java, with some more
theoretical CS included too. There are no entry requirements and
obviously because it's the OU you can take it at your own pace (for
example, if you wanted to work or do some internships while you study).

It'd be nice to hear from anyone on the list who has any opinions about
OU degrees compared to degrees from residential universities, especially
with regards to how they're viewed by employers.

Cheers,

Chris
