Re: [ubuntu-uk] Mobile broadband modems - using them on multiple networks

2008-12-19 Thread Douglas Campbell
Rob,

I am using the Huawei E220 with Vodafone on Intrepid 8.10

The laptop is an EI systems 13 inch screen.

The broadband worked straight away.

[ubuntu-uk] new internet cafe using ubuntu (not in the UK)

2008-08-31 Thread Douglas Campbell
Dear All,

On holiday in Zambia I came across an Internet cafe converting to
Ubuntu. It is the Kilimanjaro cafe at the Manda Hill shopping centre.

If any of you ever go to the country, please use it. They were set up
for wireless access, too.

(My wife is Zambian hence my visit.)

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Memory problems with Gutsy and OpenOffice

2007-10-27 Thread Douglas Campbell
Hi

This is my first post too from someone who is generally a very satisfied
convert to Ubuntu.

I have not had the difficulty you experienced with OpenOffice Cal but I
have encountered a problem using OpenOffice Draw on my Latitude X1. The
program will not open any drawing and just goes into recover mode.

This is a problem as I have embedded some drawings on one chapter of my
thesis which I am trying to finish.

Sadly, the only way I can alter the drawings is by going to another
operating system.

Any comments or suggestions to solve this would be appreciated.

Douglas

[ubuntu-uk] Problem installing R packages

2007-05-21 Thread Douglas Campbell
Dear all Ubuntu users

I am an otherwise happy user working on my PhD. I am trying to download
some packages for the R statistics program but come up with the
following messages:

trying URL
'http://www.sourcekeg.co.uk/cran/src/contrib/QCAGUI_1.2-7.tar.gz'
Content type 'application/x-tar' length 1017887 bytes
opened URL
==
downloaded 994Kb

mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/lib/R/site-library/00LOCK':
Permission denied
ERROR: failed to lock directory '/usr/local/lib/R/site-library' for
modifying

The downloaded packages are in
/tmp/RtmpJxvMD5/downloaded_packages
Warning messages:
1: installation of package 'QCAGUI' had non-zero exit status in:
install.packages()
2: cannot create HTML package index in:
tools:::unix.packages.html(.Library)

Does anyone have any suggestions, please about how I can unlock the
appropriate directory.

Many thanks

Douglas
