try openshot it's in the repositories. Import images as a sequence, define
frame rate then add an audio track. You can then save the movie in a number
of formats.

You could consider DaDaBik http://www.dadabik.org/ which provides a web
based Open Source PHP front end which has been tested on MySQL, PostgreSQL,
SQLite, Oracle and MS SQL Server. I use it at both home and work. It's very
easy to import spreadsheets into the Db and provide users password login

makes a play list and also syncs with Ubuntu One. Both have album art

An easy way to synchronise multiple calendars is to use the Google Calendar
Provider
add-on I use this to sunchronise my Thunderbird (lightning) calendar with
Windows Outlook and of course Google. Any changes made to either calendar
are automatically updated in the others. So if you had multiple Lightning
calendars and one Google calendar this should work. Good article on
Lifehacker
.

another method which has worked for me is to synchronise Outlook Calendar
with Gmail Calendar and Thunderbird Calendar i.e Outlook->GCal->Thunderbird.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] System hosed during network upgrade to 8.10

2008-11-01 Thread George MacLeod
Alan,
just thought I'd get back to you, I had a crack at this again today and
found that many others
<http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=963853>have had the same
problem. I finally go back to the Gnome Desktop but the
upgrade has removed Open Office, Firefox, Network Manger, Compiz Fusion etc.
etc. I started reinstalling packages and finally tried to get Compiz Fusion
going again so I installed xorg-driver-fglrx for my ATI Radeon X600 video
card. This just caused another freeze on re-boot so I removed the driver.

I have decide to do a fresh install of 8.04.1 and steer clear of 8.10 for
the time being as this has been the most catastrophic upgrade I've ever seen
and I will not be upgrading any of my other machines.

Cheers

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. I will try again on Monday as this is my work PC. On
this PC I have upgraded from 7.04 > 7.10 >8.04 over the network with no
problems at all. I did have Automatix way back but removed it long ago. The
machine has been very stable till now. I didn't get a logon prompt so will
have to think of another approach.

[ubuntu-uk] System hosed during network upgrade to 8.10

2008-10-31 Thread George MacLeod
Hi,
I've just had my first *really* bad experience with Ubuntu and thought I'd
post this to the list in case anyone has any solutions.

I have been using Ubuntu since 5.04 and have never had a major problem until
now. I have upgrade before via CD and via the network and always with only
minor issue, if any, until now. I ran the network upgrade as before to go
from 8.04 to 8.10 and everything went as it had in the past, until the final
stage when I was asked to OK the removal of obsolete packages. I thought
nothing of it as this is normal, but alarm bells stated ringing when I saw
Firefox, Evolution, compiz and Xorg being removed, but the process had
already started.

I then clicked restart at the end and that's when I realised all was not
well. The PC rebooted and I got the Ubuntu splash and loading screen then
this flashed on the screen 4 times then just stayed there, nothing else
happened :-

*starting anac(h)ronistic cron anacron
*starting deferred execution scheduler atd
*starting periodic command scheduler crond
*checking battery state...
*running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local)

I've tried to reboot several times with the same result and booting into
recovery mode just leaves me hanging at a terminal prompt.

Needless to say I will not be upgrading any of my other machines until I can
get this fixed.
My PC is a Dell Dimension Dual boot with XP on a corporate LAN.

Cheers
George

Has anyone else noticed the reduction in quality of the sound from the BBC?
I have been listening to 6Music for ages now using the RealPlayer plug-in in
Firefox and the sound was great. Since the IPlayer revamp the quality of the
sound is abysmal, it's very tinny and weak and is the same for all the
stations.

I'd write to your bank and point out that they cannot restrict access to any

same problem a few years ago with my bank, their web site had reduced
functionality in FF but not in IE. They've since fixed this.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Small low powered Linux box running Xu buntu for £99

2008-05-09 Thread George MacLeod
Hi,
Perhaps I was a bit harsh the machines have their uses although they were no
good for us. The main problems we found were that they're very underpowered
and slow and the graphics weren't that great. Having said that if you don't
mind a slow boot and just use it for the web etc. they're OK plus they are
very small and have a low power consumption. I also think someone mentioned
that they are only available to the public sector and this is correct we got
one from Viglen to try out but normally they would supply in bulk to
Universities and schools etc.

I believe the Eee PC runs a dumbed down version of Xandros and if you need
to re-install it you have to press F9 on boot which will re-install the base
system. There are also programs available on some of the Eee PC help sites
which are supposed to allow you to install the full Xandros system rather
than the default version. The system also comes with a CD/DVD with all the
drivers for Win XP if you choose to install that OS. You could ofcourse
install Ubuntu from an external optical drive.

They even had a look at the Eee PC on the BBC2 weekend cookery programme
'something for the weekend' where they played with the voice control and the
built in camera.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Shockwave plug in alternative

2007-08-31 Thread George MacLeod
Yeah, I had a look at Gnash and installed through Synaptic but as Terence
says this only plays Flash and since Adobe already provide a Flash player
plug in for Linux I guess it's only use would be in playing stand alone
Flash files.

If you load a web page with a Flash component it plays just fine (if you
have the plugin) but if you do the same with a page with a Director
component you just get unknown plug in (application x-director).

Re: [ubuntu-uk] ? Driver for Epson DX6000 Scan/printer ??

2007-05-23 Thread George MacLeod

Hi Lou,
the simplest and easies way to get all the 'non free' codecs including Real
Player and a whole bunch of other stuf is with Automatix. This is a GUI
which allows you to download and install a whole bunch of stuff. Get it at
http://www.getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Installation and select the
version for Dapper.

You can also do a lot of this via the Synaptic Package manager but you will
need to enable all the non official repositories.

As far as a driver for your scanner is concerned,
have you checked the Epson web site?
have you tries Xsane image scanner to see if it picks up the scanner?
Have a look here
http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Epson-Stylus_DX6000

However, the main problem I have found with it is obtaining and

I've just installed 7.04 on a similar one-year-old Dimension 5150 with
nVidia card driving a 17" Dell monitor that prefers a resolution of 1280
x 1024. But Fiesty will only offer max 1024 x 768. This is the same as
it gives me with a 15" Hanns.G monitor via a Radeon 9000 card on an
ancient Compaq AMD Athlon machine.

Any suggestions for improvement would be most welcome! (Though, to be
honest, at my age, 1024 x 768 is probably easier for my biological
optical system to resolve!!!)

[ubuntu-uk] Screen resolution issues with Ver 7.04

2007-05-11 Thread George MacLeod

Has anyone else experienced screen resolution problems with installing
Ubuntu 7.04?

I recently upgraded a version 6.10 installation on line to version 7.04, it
all went well until l re-booted the system, only to find I was restricted to
800 x 600 or 640 x 400 resolutions whereas before I had the full range. I
solved this one by removing the nVidia drivers from the system and the full
screen resolution options were restored.

Then this morning I booted from from the 7.04 install CD on a Dell Dimension
5150 dual core with screen resolutions up to 1280 x 1024 only to find that
Ubuntu live CD only offered 640 x 400 resolution, which is very weird on a
21" monitor. needless to say I did not install Ubuntu on this system in case
this was the only resolution I'd get.

I just wondered if any one else had experienced this behaviour.

Hi Peter,
Getting used to the way things are done in Linux takes time if you're used
to Windows. You can install most software packages from either
Applications>Add/Remove or by using the Synaptic package manager found in
System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager. Using Synaptic you will be
able to install Firestarter (firewall) and ClamAV (anti-virus). Personally I
usually only install Firestarter.

The link from that page to the questionnaire seems to be broken --
perhaps it's no longer available.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Another petition: Open Document Format

2007-02-23 Thread George MacLeod

Open document petition is fine and as far as changing the national anthem
you'd have no argument from anyone in Scotland ('rebelious Scots to
crush'??). Not sure about Spandau Ballet though, as Billy Connelly once
noted the Archers theme might be a good choice as eveyone could sing along Rum
Te tum tum etc etc.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Donation of Old PCs

2007-01-04 Thread George MacLeod

I run a small charity (www.clacksnet.org.uk) and we are about to start a
scheme where local community groups, charities and the low waged can get a
fully functioning PC with Ubuntu inatalled as well as all the useual Open
Source s/w for a small donation. The idea came about as I work at the
University of Stirling which has a fairly high turnaround of PCs and as they
have to pay for disposal it's better for them to donate them to my charity.
We are starting small at first with only PCs from my own departmant and if
this goes well I'll approach the desktop support team with a proposal. I
only take fully operational Pentium 2 or above systems and agree to wipe the
HDD. I've found P2s run very well on Ubuntu 6.06 and P3s are still OK with
6.1. I also found that Xubuntu is more suitable for some laptops (Thinkpads)
than Ubuntu.
Cheers
George

Hi,

Has anyone looked into taking donations of old PCs, which businesses
throw out, and installing a form of Ubuntu on them. Then giving them
to schools, youth clubs etc who couldn't afford to buy them?

I know there are a few systems like this already but this is a great
way to get Ubuntu used more and more, and do a bit of charity work at
the same time!

This is also a great time to start talking about it as soon many
businesses will be upgrading systems for Vista.
